ARTHUR WILLIAM CAMPBELL 1920 - 2010 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our much loved father, grandfather and great-grandfather Art Campbell of Teulon MB on August 19, 2010. His memory will be cherished forever by his daughters: Katherine Killbery, Alys and Brian Tomasson and Elaine and Don Logan, all of Winnipeg. He is survived by his grandchildren: Robin (Rob) Carnegie of Winnipeg, Lorelie (Dean) McAuley of Kelowna, Ross (Barb) Killbery of Kenora, Arthur (Yvette) Killbery of Winnipeg, Renatta (Randy) Chambers of Pearland, Texas and Patrick Kelly of Winnipeg. Art is also survived by eight great-grandchildren: Sydney and Danielle Carnegie, Taylor and Troy McAuley, Michael and Jennifer Killbery and Lathan and Ainslee Chambers. Art was predeceased by his beloved wife Laura in 2009, his daughter Shelagh Marie in 2008 and son-in-law Barry Killbery in 2008. Art was born April 11, 1920 in Cabri, SK and spent part of his childhood in Hespero, AB before moving to Teulon in 1936. On June 11, 1941 Art enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He left Canada December 27, 1941 and arrived in Scotland January 12, 1942. Art was stationed at the R.A.F. Middleton St. George, Yorkshire Bomber Command Station where he proudly served as a Leading Aircraftsman with the 419 Squadron until his discharge in April 1945. On his first leave in January 1942 Art met Laura when he made a last minute decision to join his comrades at a dance put on for the troops at her church in Edinburgh. Once he met Laura, Art always said he never had eyes for anyone else. They married July 24, 1943 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Art returned to Canada with his Scottish War Bride to farm with his father Sam. He was proud to say he had the best job in the world and he looked forward to farming every day. Art held many other jobs over the years: school bus driver, magistrate, marriage commissioner, caretaker, repairman, construction worker, but he was always a farmer. Art was extremely honoured to receive a Life Membership in the Legion in November 2009 and his 65 year Legion pin in March 2010. He became involved with the Legion when he joined the Canadian Legion of the British Empire in Britain during the Second World War. He was President of the Teulon Legion Branch #166 when the Cenotaph was unveiled in Teulon on June 21, 1964. After Teulon Branch #166 amalgamated with Stonewall Branch #52 Art continued to be active in the Legion. In June 2010 Art went to Ottawa with his daughter Elaine to attend the Turning of the Page ceremony in the Peace Tower. The event was very special to him because he was able to see the entry for his brother James who was killed in battle in Italy in 1944. He met with Prime Minister Steven Harper and the Minister of Veterans Affairs, the Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn. Art attended question period in the House of Commons where he was introduced to the House by his Member of Parliament, James Bezan, as a true Canadian hero who served his country during the Second World War and as an outstanding member of his community. Art was honoured by a standing ovation from all the members and a salute from the Minister of Veterans Affairs. Art led by example and instilled in his family a strong sense of pride in Canada. We are very respectful of his integrity, honesty, work ethic and his service to Canada. As a Leading Aircraftsman his job was to service the aircraft when the air crew returned from a mission. Many nights the ground crew waited until well past dawn to learn the fate of a crew that did not return. Bonds were formed during those difficult years that did not diminish with time. Art and Laura enjoyed the reunions of the 419 Moose Squadron and kept in contact with the lads after the last reunion. Art's devotion to Laura was unwavering and his family is very proud of his ability to finish his journey in life without her and with such remarkable courage. His family is grateful for the support of Bert and Kathy Campbell and family, Mike and Shaleen Louden, Bill and Edith Docking, Merv and Lyall Campbell, Sophie Podaima, Shirley Sinclair and many others who enabled our Dad to live independently after our Mom passed away. Dad's life was one well lived with love and dedication to his family that we felt every moment of every day. We will never forget our memorable trip to Philadelphia or going to Winnipeg Beach for a picnic on Sunday afternoons. If we got to go on the Boardwalk and have soft ice cream, we thought our life was perfect. Dad worked hard but always had time for his girls, be it a picnic when we took his lunch out to the field, taking us to Eaton's for new school shoes, teaching us to skate and ride bikes, reading the comics from the Free Press Prairie Farmer Weekly or just taking the time to make us feel special, something he continued to do for his entire life. Thank you Dad. His family would like to thank the staff at the Teulon Hunter Memorial Hospital for the excellent care and consideration given to our Dad. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 27, 2010 at the Teulon Rockwood Centennial Centre. Reverend Ken DeLisle will officiate. There will be a private family interment prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Stonewall Legion Branch #52, Stonewall, MB R0C 2Z0, the Dundas Cemetery, Box 23, Teulon, MB R0C 3B0 or to a charity of one's choice. MacKenzie Funeral Home, Teulon in charge of arrangements. Rest in Peace Great Grandpa Medals
