ERNEST (ERNIE) MARTIN It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Ernie Martin on Sunday, August 22, 2010 at Victoria General Hospital at the age of 80 years. Ernie was predeceased by his parents Lawrence and Eva, sisters, Dorothy and Joan, and brothers, Walter and Albert. Left to cherish Ernie's memory are his loving wife Edith (Edie); his daughter Linda (Avery) Mapplebeck; son Carl (Gayle) Martin; along with grandsons, Cory, Drew and Jacob. Ernie was born on April 2, 1930 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He grew up in Charleswood and attended Daniel Mclntyre school. As a young adult, Ernie was involved in many team sports but particularly enjoyed hockey, lacrosse and baseball. He also went on to referee all levels of junior hockey for l5 years. Ernie spent most of his work life with Air Canada where he began as a flight maintenance worker and ended his career as a flight inspector. After 33 years of service, he retired and remained active primarily with curling and of course, GOLF, which was his true passion! Along with Edie, he would also spend time during the winter seasons near Brownville, Texas where they owned a trailer and made many good friends over the years. He was very proud of his two children and was always very supportive of them whether it be offering fatherly advice or just helping to get things done - he was always there for us! He also had many fond memories of visiting his grandsons Drew and Cory in Nova Scotia as much as possible so he could watch them as they grew up into the young men that they are today. His youngest grandson Jacob was also a source of joy in his life and always brought a smile to his face. Unfortunately, a variety of health concerns challenged Ernie's independence and his ability to stay as active as he wished in recent years. Despite these setbacks, he still continued to work hard and always gave 110% towards his recovery. He will remain in our hearts and we will love him always. Many thanks to the dedicated staff on the 5th floor at Victoria Hospital for their care and compassion and also to his family physician Dr. Hayward who Ernie also held in very high regard. Memorial service will be held on Friday, August 27, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Children's Hospital Foundation, 501-840 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg R3A 1S1. Chapel Lawn 885-9715
