HAZEL JEAN CONNELL (nee HOGG) October 13, 1913 August 24, 2010 With love and gratitude for a long life well lived, the family announces that Hazel passed away peacefully on August 24, 2010 at Victoria Hospital at 96 years of age. Her loving husband Cam predeceased her in March 2010 after 70 years of marriage and her son Garth predeceased her in 2007. She is lovingly missed by her children and their families: Gail Matiation (Len) and Nicole (Pascal), Jodi, and Stefan (Cathy); Sandra Butcher (Roger) and Chris (Sarah), and Corrie (Mohamed); Glenn Connell (Barbara); and daughter-in-law Keri Connell and Jared (Mandy), Timothy (Monique), Jesse (Jill), Evan (Ericka), and Jazmin. Hazel's great-grandchildren will also miss her: Katya, Gavin, Raphael, Colten, Solana, Taza, Wakyna, Jaya, Elsa, Olivia, Max, Casey, Sofia, Emily and Leah. Hazel is also remembered with fondness by her sister Wilma Tickle and sisters-in-law Ruby Hogg, Norma Hogg and Tannas Brown. She was predeceased by her brothers Mervin (overseas in the Second World War), Jim and Bruce. Hazel enjoyed all her nieces and nephews and kept up with the extended family's news with great interest. Hazel was born on October 13, 1913 in Saskatoon, the daughter of John and Mabel Hogg. She grew up on the family homestead near Warren, Manitoba as part of a farming family. Growing up on the farm, Hazel learned and enjoyed sewing, knitting, baking, gar-dening, and canning and she excelled at being a wonderful homemaker over the course of her life. She met Cam when he was a teacher in Warren and they married in August 1939. During the war years, she and Gail lived with her parents on the farm while Cam served overseas. She raised her family in the Lord Roberts area of Winnipeg and enjoyed being close to the riverbank where her children could play freely with their community friends and she could watch the changing seasons along the river. Hazel participated in many activities as the wife of a teacher and school administrator. She was a founding member of the Schoolmasters' Wives Association and attended one of its luncheons this past spring. She was an active curler and made many friendships at the Fort Rouge Curling Club. Hazel was a member of Churchill Park (Rosedale) United Church and was part of the U.C.W. where she contributed to many church functions. She was a supporter of the arts and enjoyed attending the theatre, ballet and symphony with Cam. She also carried her sporting love of baseball as a young girl into her passion for watching it on television. One of Hazel's greatest loves was the family cottage at Big Whiteshell Lake where she and Cam enjoyed spending time with their family and seeing their grandchildren learn to love the lake. Hazel particularly liked to pick berries, bake for family, fish with Cam, and watch nature out the front window. When Cam retired, one of the first trips they took was a camping trip to the east coast, which Hazel talked about often. They enjoyed retirement and kept an active life sharing activities together and trips to England and Scotland; winter vacations in Texas, Hawaii and Victoria; and lots of time at the lake. The family will miss Hazel's gentleness and her lively conversations. Hazel's caring manner and interest in family meant so much to her children and their spouses, and her grand-children and great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank the staff of Victoria Hospital for their wonderful care during Hazel's recent stay there and also Dr. Sheldon Permack. The family also thanks Thorvaldson Care Home for their support to Hazel. A funeral service will be held at Churchill Park United Church, 525 Beresford Avenue on Saturday, August 28 at 11:00 a.m. Viewing will take place the hour prior to the service. Reception and interment will follow. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations in Hazel's memory may be made to The Winnipeg Foundation (Schoolmasters' Wives Association Scholarship Fund), 1350-One Lombard Place, Winnipeg MB, R3B 0X3, Phone 204-944-9474 or online at www.wpgfdn.org or a charity of your choice.
