JOE GLADSTONE Peacefully on Sunday, July 4, 2010 Joe Gladstone passed away at the Grace Hospital, at the age of 93 years. Joe will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his daughter Frances (Jim); son Len (Arlene); grandchildren, Adam, Talia, Ryan and Brett; great-granddaughters, Hayley and Kalia; sister, Ann Morden and brother, Lawrence; as well as nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Evelyn, his parents Harry and Frieda and brother Max. Born in Winkler Manitoba on July 1, 1917 he would often joke that Canada celebrated his birthday. Shortly after branching out from the family owned and operated business in Winkler he moved to Winnipeg and married his beautiful beloved Evelyn. In Winnipeg he opened a used car lot on Main Street, later moving to Portage Avenue where the first Canadian West Coast Datsun/Nissan automobile dealership was born. Along with his wife Evelyn, Joe led a very active, full life, filled with much joy, laughter and love. Together they raised a family, participated in the community, travelled extensively, danced, bowled, curled, and played golf. It was during one of their travels that they discovered the aloha of Hawaii and soon after decided to make Honolulu their winter home. At the age of 60 Joe took up tennis again with Evelyn and the game became his passion for the next 30 years. He could be found organizing games at the Glendale Country Club during the summer and he became a permanent winter fixture at the Diamond Head Tennis Courts where he would co-ordinate games for both locals and visitors. He was most affectionately known by all there as Papa Joe . He truly loved the game and when at 90 he finally had to give it up he missed playing as well as the camaraderie and friendships it brought him daily. Those who were fortunate to know him will always remember his generosity, wonderful sense of humor, flare for style and zest for life. Joe has left us with wonderful memories to enrich our lives and although his passing leaves a huge void, he will always be remembered with love. The family would like to express a very special thank you to Paulette Spencer for her years of love, care and devotion to Papa Joe . Funeral services were held July 6, 2010 at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue, officiated by Rabbi Pinsker. Pallbearers were Adam McGinnes, Ryan Gladstone, Brett Gladstone, David Meyrowitz, Zivy Chudnow and Lou Cogan. Should you wish to make a donation in Joe's memory it may be made to the Joe and Evelyn Gladstone Fund at The Jewish Foundation of Manitoba or to a charity of your choice.
