MARY MILLER LOOK July 11, 1920 - August 13, 2010 On Friday, August 13, 2010 after a long and productive life, Mary passed away peacefully at her home, Golden West Centennial Lodge. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 59 years, Herbert (Herb) Edward Look in 1998 and her beloved only son James (Jim) Edward Look on Christmas Day, 2006. She was also predeceased by her parents; three sisters, Wilhelmina (Minnie) Ness, Ester McIntosh, Jessie Johnson; and four brothers, William (Bill), George, Tom and Jim McIntosh. Left to give thanks for Mary's life and mourn her passing are her daughter Donna Kagan and husband Morris and their children, Jamie Kagan, Rhonda Byrnes and Elaine Graham; and her daughter-in-law Cheryl Look and her children, David Look and James Look. Mary also leaves five great-grandchildren, Finn Look, Fletcher, Rafferty and Emerson Look, all of Vancouver, BC and Joshua Kagan of Winnipeg. Mary also leaves her sister Margaret Bell of Headingley; her brother Gordon McIntosh, formerly of Headingley and now Brandon; and her brother-in-law Pat Johnson. Mary was born Mary McIntosh at the family home on Alboro Street in Headingley, the seventh of the 10 children of William and Frances McIntosh. In 1939 she married Herb and together they travelled across Canada for Herb to obtain his pilot's wings as part of the Commonwealth Air Training Program. Like many other young women of the time, she waited out the war as a single parent, while Herb served overseas. In 1945 Herb and Mary purchased what became Look's Grocery Store located on the north side of Portage Avenue where it intersects with Westwood Drive in what was then known as Kirkfield Park (now Assiniboia). They operated the store together until they retired in 1989. Mary always took great pride in her home and garden and was a wonderful cook and baker. For many years she hosted Sunday dinners for the family, complete with prime rib, Yorkshire pudding and apple pie. In retirement she and Herb enjoyed many vacations to far away places. Mary also liked to bowl with the seniors' league and belonged to Headingley United Church. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren. She and Herb often hosted the grandkids on their boat at Lake of the Woods for the weekend, or sometimes she would just let them tear up her house. Mary was a very fastidious person but the grandchildren could do no wrong. In October of 2006, failing health necessitated Mary's move to Golden West. She was very appreciative of the many kindnesses shown her by the staff there and until very shortly before her death, she happily participated in every activity offered to her. Mary's family is also very grateful for the help and compassion of the staff. A memorial service and celebration of Mary's life will be held at Golden West Centennial Lodge, 811 School Rd., Winnipeg on Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. with a reception to follow. If anyone wishes to make a memorial tribute, a donation to either Golden West or to the Winnipeg Humane Society would be appreciated.
