EMORY EARL HARRISON July 15, 1937 August 31, 2010 Earl's family is sad to announce his sudden but peaceful passing, at home on August 31, 2010, at age 73. Emory Earl Harrison, Jr. (known as Earl) was born on June 15, 1937 in Corpus Christi, Texas, the only child of Emory Earl Harrison and Georgialene (Joy) Sheffield Harrison. Diagnosed with diabetes as a child, Earl was insulin-dependent from age seven. After growing up in Corpus Christi, he married Carol Cheavens of Dallas in 1959 and began a series of moves that brought them to Winnipeg, Manitoba, along with their children, Lynn and Chris, both of whom now live in Toronto. Earl was a lifelong writer, reader, teacher, seeker and friend. Educated at Baylor, Duke, the University of Wisconsin and the University of Iowa, Earl held two Master of Arts degrees (in history and English/creative writing). For a decade (1967 to 1978), he was a professor in the Faculty of English at the University of Winnipeg. He subsequently worked as a writer, consultant and employee assistance professional. The author of numerous articles, broadcast scripts, plays and a published non-fiction book, Earl was currently developing his latest play entitled Making God Laugh . His deep connection to Immanuel United Church included co-founding the Immanuel Players theatre group and serving as its director for several years. A specialist in human development, spirituality and recovery from addiction, who generously shared his wisdom with others, Earl marked 30 years of sobriety on July 11, 2010. He is survived by his wife Carol (Cheavens) Harrison; daughter Lynn, husband David McLachlan, Tucker and Calla; son Christopher (Chris) and Kimberly Gray, as well as loving extended family and friends. A celebration of his life will be held at Immanuel United Church, 755 Golspie Street in Winnipeg at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, September 6, 2010. Donations may be made in Earl's memory to the Canadian Diabetes Association. God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. NEIL BARDAL INC.
