FRANCES SUSKY (WOLCHUK)
Date of Passing: Sep 02, 2010
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryFRANCES SUSKY (nee WOLCHUK) Frances passed away peacefully on September 2, 2010 at the age of 96 years after a brief stay in Grace General Hospital. Nana was born in Foley, Manitoba in 1914 to Stefan and Catherine Wolchuk, the youngest of nine children. She was predeceased by her brothers John, Joe and Mike; her sisters Teresa, Eva, Annie, Mary and Josephine; her grandson Kevin; and by Peter, her loving husband of 65 years. Frances is survived by her daughter Lorane Steiman and husband Curtis, her daughter Janet Shore and husband Dale of Pickering, Ontario, and by her son David Susky. Nana will also be lovingly remembered by nine grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren in Winnipeg, Toronto and South Carolina. Frances grew up in the Foley-Winnipeg Beach area and was a daughter of Polish immigrants who worked hard to earn a living from the land. Her early life was marked by a close relationship to the earth and nature and this trait stayed with her for her entire life. Frances planted and harvested a garden every year and always had a multitude of beautiful flowers in her front yard. In 1931, Frances met a young school teacher. Peter courted Frances for two years and they were married in 1933. Frances supported her husband's teaching career, moving from Foley to Sandy Hook, Gimli and Winnipeg. Their love and 65 year marriage was unwavering until Peter's death in 1998. Frances nurtured her family all of her life. She was an able and prodigious cook. Turkey dinners, holupchi, pies ... biscotti, pizza, salsa, ... and of course her perogies! Nana was a strong woman with a sharp mind and wasn't afraid to let you know her opinion. We thank God for truly blessing Frances with a long, healthy and productive life. She was able to live at home, tend her garden and feed her family right to the end. We love you Nana and will miss you. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 9 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Margaret's Anglican Church in Wolseley, NW Ethelbert St. and Westminster Ave. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Society for Manitobans with Disabilities in memory of Frances. To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven: A time to be born and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted.

My memories of Frances Susky are like a rich feast of the best that life on Earth has to offer, a recipe for living based a quiet spiritual faith, a love of gardening and gratitude for the gifts of the Earth and its fruits, and loving care in the preparation of hearty and nutritious food made with skill and sensitivity as the seasons passed in our extended family circle. By the example of her wisdom and her love Frances quietly defined for all who knew her what it means to be a woman, a mother and a grandmother for all seasons. Her example is her lasting legacy to a life well lived. Laura Steiman - Posted by: Laura Leah Steiman (Admirer) on: Sep 15, 2024
