DONALD J. HUTTON It is with great sadness the family of Donald J. Hutton announces his passing on September 4, 2010 at Riverview Health Centre with family by his side. Don will be deeply missed by his wife Betty, children Karen, Dave (Winona) Bob (Laurel), grandchildren Stephanie, Alix, and Sydney. He is also survived by brothers Richard (Anita), Jack (Linda), David (Charlotte), sisters Bonnie Fortin (Claude), Carol Karle (Randy) as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother Cora and his father John. Don was born in Minnedosa, MB and attended school in Thunder Bay, ON. Don and Betty started their life together in Moose Jaw, SK. The family also lived in Thunder Bay and Calgary prior to moving to Winnipeg in 1986. No matter where he lived Don has always been active in sports and community service. Don's involvement in hockey included coaching the Kinsmen Midget All-stars and was President of the Moose Jaw Canucks Junior A hockey team. He was later involved in coaching at the minor level in Thunder Bay and in Winnipeg with the Greendell Falcons. His baseball involvement included the Moose Jaw Regals and the Thunder Bay Gateway Builders Senior Baseball teams as Manager. Don was a Past President and Life Member of the Thunder Bay Fort City Kinsmen Club and Past District 2 Governor. Don volunteered for 11 years with Golf Manitoba as an official. He was also a volunteer with the Canadian Cancer Society. For the past three years Don has worked tirelessly for the Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada as an advocate, speaker, Cancer Coach and organizer. Don retired after a career in the sign industry as a sales manager at 57. He then started a new business that he operated until failing health forced him to retire a second time at 69. Don loved to travel, with Betty, with his children and then with his grandchildren. He loved the whole process of planning the trip from the original inkling of an idea to selecting routes, accommodations, sightseeing and activities. Don took up both golf and downhill skiing in mid-life and became an avid skier and golfer. His love of travel also complimented these pastimes as several family ski trips were orchestrated by Don from home base in Calgary. Don was a member and Past President of Niakwa Country Club. A celebration of Don's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday September 10 at Niakwa Country Club. Interment will take place 1:00 p.m. on Monday, September 13 at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Oliver Road, Thunder Bay. In lieu of flowers the family would be grateful for donations to the Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada (Manitoba), 60 Ste. Clair Ave. East, Suite 204, Toronto, ON, M4T 1N5. Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • The Kick Butt Walk or Run for Colorectal Cancer would not have been what it is today without Don's little prodding "Kicks in the Butt" to keep me motivated over the last two years. His timely phone calls as co-chair of the run always seemed to be just the nudge I needed to get me motivated. Even when frustrated with lack of response from letters to sponsors, Don always managed to find a way to keep me going. The Giant Colon Tour and GetYourButtSeen.ca campaign would not be in Winnipeg today without his influential words at just the right time. - Posted by: Sid Chapnick (Friend) on: Sep 08, 2010
