ALLAN ERICKSON After a courageous battle with cancer, we sadly announce the passing of Allan Erickson on September 8, 2010. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 47 years, Sylvia (Wick) and their two daughters, Cheryl (and husband Sheldon Bartel) and Joanne (and husband Bernie Clement) and grandchildren Madison and Dallas Clement and Alyssa and Morgan Bartel. He will also be missed by his sister Gladys Erickson, extended family members and countless friends. Allan was born in Kaministiquia, Ontario on November 26, 1937, the son of Armas and Toini Erickson. After graduating from Nipigon High School, Allan joined the Hudson's Bay / NorthWest Company as a butcher in 1957. This would be the first and last company he would work for. His dedication to the company and hard work habits would lead him through an impressive career which included department manager positions in Atikokan and Flin Flon, as well as store manager postings in Lynn Lake, Yorkton, Flin Flon, and Thompson. He put as much focus on the importance of his staff as he did to the tasks he performed in his position. Prior to retiring in 1995 he spent the last 20 years at the Winnipeg Head Office of Northwest Company in a variety of management positions. Allan loved being around people and was a wonderful raconteur. He loved sports and played both hockey and basketball as a youngster. Allan kept four sports clubs especially close. He was a lifelong fan of the Detroit Red Wings and attended a game in 1963 at the Olympia as part of his honeymoon with Sylvia. His football team was the Edmonton Eskimos and he somehow convinced his entire family that this was the team they all had to cheer for. Later in life he became a diehard Winnipeg Goldeyes fan, loving to listen to his team on the radio equally as attending a game at the park. The club where he spent countless volunteer hours and where he will be missed most is the St. Vital Curling Club. Whether it involved planning an event, helping install a new elevator or selling grocery cards to raise funds, Allan's dedication to his curling club was unsurpassed. He loved the game of curling but made an equal attempt to be a contributing member to his curling club, so much so that they presented him with an honourary life membership in 2004. Allan's spirit, wit and humbleness will be most remembered by his family and friends. He loved life and gave it his all to make the most of every day. Whether it was a good or bad curling or golf shot, he always looked upon it from a positive perspective. He loved nothing better than to be camping with his family, enjoying another great meal and exclaiming to all ... Good Stuff Maynard You will be tremendously missed Allan. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to all the doctors, nurses, and staff at St. Boniface Hospital for the compassion and care Al received during his many stays in the hospital this summer. A memorial for Allan will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 15, 2010 at Bethel Community Church (located at 430 Lakewood Boulevard). In lieu of flowers a donation can be made in Allan Erickson's memory to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation (www.cancercare.mb.ca) or to the St. Vital Curling Club (P.O. Box 66 St. Vital Post Office).
