EDGAR MAURICE MATTHEWS It is with deep sadness that we announce that Edgar Maurice Matthews, after a courageous battle with cancer, has passed away on September 8, 2010 at Deer Lodge Hospital at the age of 83. Ed was born in Regina, Saskatchewan on January 7, 1927 to parents William and Elizabeth Matthews. Ed was predeceased by his first wife Ruth, his granddaughter Kaylee, his sister Hazel and his brother Raymond. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 15 years Jessie Haggarty, his son Ronald (Suzan Matthews), his daughter Sharon Barkley (Mark Jerome) and granddaughters Shyanne and Shantal, his brothers Harvey and Harold, his stepdaughters Shelley Haggarty (Todd Solar), Kathy Ager (Scott) and stepgranddaughter Emily, and his stepson Karl Haggarty (Gwenn Smith). Ed was Veteran of 20 years and was proud to have served his country. During the Second World War Ed enlisted in the Navy at a young age as a stoker and during the Korean War he enlisted in the Army and became a paratrooper. As a young man he worked across Canada from Toronto, Ontario to Vancouver, British Columbia to Thompson, Manitoba before settling into Winnipeg to work for the city and raise his family. The family expresses their thanks to the staff at Deer Lodge Hospital and the Riverview Health Centre for their support and care of Ed. In keeping with Ed's wishes cremation will take place and a funeral service will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to CancerCare Manitoba.
