ANDRE BERNARDIN (ANDY) Peacefully, on Sunday, September 12, 2010 at the St. Boniface Hospital, Andy, beloved husband of Gertrude, passed away at the age of 88 years. Andy was predeceased by his wife Gertrude in 2001, brothers Chuck and Barney. He will be lovingly remembered by his daughter Jacqueline of Winnipeg, and son René of Montreal, sister Terry (Orland) Smith, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Oswald (Lucille), Bernard (Jeannine), Therese, Irene Carriere, Therese (Ed) Laroche, numerous nieces and nephews. Born in 1922 in Elie, Manitoba to Gabriel and Amelia Bernardin. Andy, as many young men did, joined the Royal Canadian Army in 1940 serving with the P.P.C.L.I. He was wounded in action in Italy in December 1943 and briefly hidden by an Italian family. Returning to Winnipeg he was discharged July 1945. He was proud of serving his country and later in life enjoyed sharing his stories via television and radio. In Winnipeg he met Gertie and they were married in 1949. He joined Air Canada where he worked for more than 25 years. He was transferred to Montreal in 1960. So he, Gertie, Jackie, and René decided to move to Montreal. After 17 years there he retired and returned to Winnipeg. Andy and Gertie enjoyed their retirement. Having a cottage in Traverse Bay for 25 years he was well known at the Birchwood Hotel, where he liked playing pool. Although Gertie did not like to travel much, Andy did. He traveled to Europe, Montreal and British Columbia often to see family and friends. Andy was a generous and friendly person and will be missed and remembered. A celebration of Andy's life will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, September 16, 2010 at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd., (South of the Royal Canadian Mint). Interment will follow in Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens. Family wish to thank the nursing staff of St. Boniface Hospital, as well as the staff of Cathedral Manor for their loving care and support given to Andy. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Andy to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba. A Long Life well lived . Glen Lawn Funeral Home 982-7550
