Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryKENNETH WHITFORD JONES January 31, 1919 - September 13, 2010 It is with heavy hearts that we announce Ken's sudden passing only hours after a happy day spent with family and friends celebrating his wife's 90th birthday. He was 91 years old. Left to treasure his memory are his wife of 63 years, Alma, sons Douglas and Richard, daughter Linda (Lee) and grandchildren Kelly (fiancé Andy), Jenny and Brett. He is also survived by his brother Don (Trudy) of Calgary, his brother-in-law Fred (Vicki), sisters-in-law Elsie, Hilda and Doreen in Calgary, Pat in Chatham and Linda in Nanaimo. He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews, their families, and relatives in England. He was predeceased by his parents, Violet and Frederick, brothers Dick , Ted, sister Bette, brothers-in-law Cliff, Tony, Al, Wilf and sister-in-law Betty. Ken was born in Saskatchewan but spent his formative years in Morris, Manitoba before moving to Winnipeg. He joined N. M. Paterson Sons in 1938. With the outbreak of the Second World War he enlisted and served in the Air Force. He was posted to India and Ceylon (Sri Lanka) for three years where he installed some of the earliest radar facilities. When the war ended he returned to Paterson's and had a very successful career as a vessel broker managing the steamship division, Winnipeg Charterers. He retired in 1984. As a younger man he was an avid tennis player. He curled for many years at the Grain Exchange Curling Club and more recently with the Charleswood Seniors, where he was still curling at age 90. He also enjoyed getting out for a round of golf. After retirement he and Alma continued to enjoy winters in Palm Springs and occasional other trips. In summer he could be found at the family cottage at Caddy Lake, a place he dearly loved. He was always puttering around fixing, painting and keeping the place up. Ken was a gentleman. He loved life and even during his last few months had plans for the future. He was always there solid as a rock ready to help. We will miss his love, generosity and guidance. We were blessed to have had so many years together. He had a wonderful life. A memorial service for Ken will be held at Westworth United Church (Grosvenor at Lanark) on Saturday, September 18 at 2:00 p.m. So they passed over and all the trumpets sounded for them on the other side.
