DR. AZIZ AHMAD KHAN F.R.C.S. 1935 - 2010 On Sunday, September 12, 2010, Dr. Aziz Khan passed away peacefully at the palliative care unit of St. Boniface Hospital with his wife and son Omar by his side. Aziz was born in Bahawalpur, Pakistan, the eldest of eight children. He was predeceased by his parents and four siblings. He excelled in his studies and qualified M.B.B.S from Punjab University, Pakistan in 1957. He was awarded prizes in Biology and Physics; silver medal in Physiology; academic colors and merit scholarships for the years 1953 through 1955. Aziz moved to the U.K. in 1963 where he worked at several prestigious hospitals in the London area while pursuing his F.R.C.S. training under such people as Hamilton Bailey (Love Bailey book of surgery), Lord Brock and Sir Magdi Jacoub (cardio-thoracic surgeons) at Brompton chest hospital, London, and Norman Barrett (Barrett's esophagus). Aziz qualified F.R.C.S. (Edin) in 1966 and was well respected by his superiors for his skills as a general surgeon, where he did all manner of surgical procedures both elective, emergency and trauma, at a time when general surgery encompassed everything. In 1968 he qualified L.R.C.P; L.R.C.S. (Edin) L.R.C.P. S (Glas). Aziz met his wife of 41 years in 1966 when they worked together at The Worcester Royal Infirmary. They married in April 1969. Their first son, Omar, was born in England in 1970. Together the family immigrated to Canada in 1974 where Aziz worked at the Grace Hospital and his second son, Tarik, was born in 1975. Aziz was director of emergency at St. Boniface hospital for one year before deciding to start his family practice in Stony Mountain. It was his privilege to serve the community up until his retirement in 2001. Both in his surgical and family practice careers he put his patients first and always went above and beyond. His patients received nothing short of his very best. Leaving to mourn his passing are his wife Audrey, son Tarik, son Omar (Caroline) and granddaughter Nevada, his remaining family in Pakistan and his extended family here and in the U.K. It is with gratitude we acknowledge the community palliative care nurses, the staff of the palliative care unit and Dr. Carey Isaac for their devoted care. In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place. He wanted no service. If friends wish, donations in his memory may be made to The Down Syndrome Society of Manitoba, The Winnipeg Humane Society or CancerCare Manitoba.
