Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMARTHA MARGARET LOWRY 1917 - 2010 Peacefully in the evening of August 28, Margaret passed away at the age of 93 at Lions Manor on Sherbrook. She chose to live there because of her roots in downtown Winnipeg. She was born at the Freemason's Hospital in Morden to Samuel and Isabelle Lowry and lived the first years of her life on various farms around Darlingford, with special memories of the George White family. They moved to Winnipeg when she was 12 and she has lived here ever since. She lived with her mother all her life and was predeceased by her mother Isabelle in 1988 and her only brother Winston in 2007. Although she never married she shared her life with Winston's family in Brandon and leaves to mourn her passing her sister-in-law Peggy in Swan River, her niece Jan (Dennis) and their family from Bowsman, her nephew David (Marian) and family in Edmonton, and her nephew Gord in Calgary. There are seven great-nieces and nephews and 12 great-great nephews and nieces. Margaret spent her life working at various careers, most notably as the station masters secretary at the Main Street CNR Railroad Station from 1943 to 1976. She retired and stayed home looking after her aging mother for over 12 years. During that time she worked part- time in the evenings at Clarks and then Gambles at the Grant Park Mall selling and promoting various products, which she really enjoyed because she met so many different people. People were her study, there wasn't a civic politician in Winnipeg that wasn't scrutinized and deliberated. Newspaper clippings with political stories filled her condo. Her other love was creating beautiful afghans and needlepoint pictures. She happily shared these with family and friends and they were simply beautiful as she had a talent for putting colours together perfectly. Margaret was truly independent and always knew what she wanted. She was only in Lions Manor for the last three months of her life. You couldn't talk her into anything! We always enjoyed trying but she was confident in her beliefs. She will be missed. At her request, a private burial took place on September 3 at Brookside Cemetery. My mother used to take me when I was small to see Mrs. Lowry and Margaret as my mother worked with Margaret at Eatons when they were young. It was this relationship, that I kept up when my mother moved to Vancouover and after she passed away. I would phone Margaret to see how she was and we would have good talks. I had worked at Safeway and she had worked at Safeway and knew a lot of managers who had moved up into the head office. She had a keen and alert mind. She was a very independent woman. The last time I saw her at the Lions Manor, she was afraid that I would leave too soon as the attendent was wanting to give her a sponge bath. She didn't want me to leave the room and told the attendent that she had seen me with no clothes on when I was a baby-it didn't make any difference. I re-assured her that I would wait outside and come back and see her when the attendent left. It was unfortunate that she had started giving up as she could have lived a lot longer if she put her mind to it.
