CATHERINE TORBIAK 1915 - 2010 Catherine passed away with her family at her side at the age of 95 on Thursday, September 16, 2010 at Holy Family Home in Winnipeg. She was the seventh of nine children born to Sam Elchyshyn and Pearl Macko, who immigrated to Canada from Mostivska Volya, Western Ukraine, in 1907 and settled in the Hamrlik area east of Poplarfield in Manitoba's Interlake Region. She grew up on the family farm and attended Leeland School. In 1936, she married Michael Torbiak. They shared 47 happy years together in various Canadian locations where Mike's RCAF postings took them, and then in Poplarfield, Atikokan and Winnipeg until his death in 1983. Catherine devoted her life to her family. She was an active participant in the church in Poplarfield, and later a member of the Sts. Vladimir Olga Branch of the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League of Canada. She was predeceased by her parents, all of her siblings, John, Annie (Rozak), George, Fred, Mary (Foster), Pauline (Werhun), Pearl (Jamieson), and Nick. She was also predeceased by her daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Zenovey Danylchuk, and her granddaughter, Patricia Anne Marykuca. She leaves to mourn and cherish her memory four daughters, Elsie Marykuca (Marvin), Patrusia Babick (Terry), Lily Pringle (Scott) and Marie Chomokovski (Richard); two sons, John (Stephanie) and George (Shelagh); 18 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. As per Baba's request, all of her grandchildren are designated as her pallbearers. Active pallbearers are her grandsons, Marc Torbiak, Michael Marykuca, Ivas Babick, Jonathan Pringle, Jordan Torbiak, Steven Chomokovski, Patrick Chomokovski and Derrick Chomokovski. Honourary pallbearers are her granddaughters, Tanya Stawychny, Katherine Marykuca, DonnaMarie Ouellette, Larissa VanCaeseele, Lesia Kushner, Paula Onysko, Patrusia Rudy, Andrea Babick, Alysha Torbiak and Erin Torbiak. Prayers will be sung at 7:00 p.m., Friday, September 24 at Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral, 115 McGregor Street, Winnipeg. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 25, also at the Cathedral, with Rt. Rev. Monsignor Mitrat Michael Buyachok and Rev. Father Volodymyr Bashutskyy officiating. Interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery. The family would like to thank the Holy Family Home, especially the staff on St. John's Ward for their care and devotion. Special thanks to Dr. Peter Connelly, Dr. Terry Babick and Dr. Andrea Babick. We are also grateful for the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate for their comfort, prayers and blessings.
