RANDY KOBES It is with sadness and love that the Kobes family announces the passing of Randy on September 18, 2010. Cherished by his family, Lise, Jonathan, Sarah, Lianne and Emilie, he was a devoted father who had a truly special and individual relationship with each of his children. Randy was predeceased by his father William Kobes and was deeply loved by his mother Clare Kobes and his sister Leslie Kobes. He will be greatly missed. A kind, gentle and selfless human being, Randy lived his life with great integrity. His quiet and unassuming nature sometimes masked the incredible inner strength and determination that allowed him to move mountains when needed. He spoke softly and was never confrontational, but he always went to the heart of the matter in a way that made people listen. Randy was an excellent academic and educator of young people. He was an outstanding scientist who made internationally recognized contributions in theoretical physics. Randy was also fully dedicated to public engagement in science. His contributions to community learning at The University of Winnipeg went far beyond the classroom. Randy was a primary driver of the Manitoba chapter of Let's Talk Science and was also keenly involved in the University's Eco-Kids programs, as well as numerous other outreach activities that involved inner-city children and youth. Most recently, he realized a long time ambition of developing a degree program in Science, Environment and Indigenous Knowledge at The University of Winnipeg. A memorial service will take place on Friday, September 24 at 10:30 a.m. in Convocation Hall at The University of Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The University of Winnipeg Foundation, where a scholarship will be established in memory of Randy.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • You will be greatly missed Dr. Kobes. He was such a sweet teacher. Learned a lot from him. I remember him buried in his office behind so many books and papers :). I just learned today. I now live in the US and still today I remember him so well. Rest in peace Dr. Kobes. Rajen Murugan - Posted by: Rajen Murugan (Dr. Kobes' former student) on: Jun 16, 2020

  • Dr. Kobes was my mentor nearly 20 years ago when I was an undergraduate. I will always remember his kind and patient manner with students such as myself in that long ago. Rest well Randy. - Posted by: Parmjit (Student) on: Nov 15, 2016

  • Randy, you will be missed by all of us who knew you and your dedication to Let's Talk Science - our consolation is that the outreach site you initiated at the University of Winnipeg will continue your work, and our tribute to you will be to nurture its growth. Your passion for science affected so many youth - both the recipients of your outreach, and the university volunteers you led and mentored. - Posted by: Isabel Deslauriers (Co-Worker) on: Sep 24, 2010
