VERNA LORRAINE STYLES (previously HOLMES) 1910 - 2010 Verna passed away peacefully on September 19, 2010, just short of her 100th birthday. She was surrounded by the love and laughter of her family throughout her final days. Left to celebrate Verna's life are her son Doug (Georgia) Holmes, grandchildren Dana (Peter) Jessiman, Sigrid (Michael) Duncan, and Brett (Tara) Holmes, great-grandchildren Alexandra and Cady Jessiman, Sam and Matthew Duncan, and Jack Holmes, sister Irene Stevens, sister-in-law, Isabel Churcher, and her extended family. She was predeceased by her parents, Ernest and Jean Churcher, husband Bill Styles, brothers Hartland and Allan Churcher, sister Gwen Houston, brothers-in-law Bill Houston and Hector Stevens, and first husband, Stan Holmes. Verna was born in Antler, Saskatchewan on December 10, 1910. In 1916 the family moved to Winnipeg. She married Stan Holmes and they resided in Brandon and Calgary before returning to Winnipeg. Stan died in 1963. Verna worked many years for Sears until retiring in 1975. About this time she reconnected with, and married, an old friend, Bill Styles. They were a very happy couple and enjoyed a number of wonderful years until Bill's death in 1982. In 2008, after 62 years in her home on Dominion Street, she moved to the Metropolitan Kiwanis Courts in St. James. Verna was a very independent woman. She insisted on mowing her own lawn and shovelling snow into her early 90s. She loved watching golf on television and enjoyed knitting and sewing. She made her family everything from baby clothes to dresses, all done to perfection. Verna was devoted to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was especially close to her daughter-in-law, Georgia, who became the daughter she never had. The family expresses its sincere gratitude and appreciation to Dr. Matthews and the nurses, medical students and staff on 3N at the Grace Hospital for their exceptional and compassionate care. Funeral service will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue on Monday, September 27, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Verna's memory to the Winnipeg Humane Society or a charity of one's choice.
