KRISTIN (CHRISTINE) SVANFRIDUR LONG (BENSON) (nee AMUNDSON) On September 20, 2010, after a brief illness, Kristin (Christine) Svanfridur Long (Benson) (nee Amundson), born February 14, 1919, of Selkirk departed for her much anticipated journey to heaven. Upon her arrival, she will be reunited with her mother Sessilja (1924), father Hjortur (1981), first husband Marus (1962), brother Olafur (1998), and sister Rosa (2009) who journeyed before her. She was a very religious individual and those beliefs had comforted and guided her through life. She had a big heart and was quick to give of herself to family, friends, her church and even strangers in need. She will be ever remembered by her second husband Frank Long, her daughters Yvonne (Keith) Kopansky, Marlene (Warren) Helgason, sons Robert (Olga) Benson and Marvin (Patricia) Benson, stepchildren Vera (Phil) Lysene, Ed (Cathy) Long, Wes (Jan) Long, Roger (Ingrid) Long, and all their respective children and grandchildren. Kristin (known as Stina to family and friends) was born in Hecla Island, and lived there with her family until moving to Selkirk in 1954. Kristin loved to cook. After the early death of her husband Marus, and in order to support her young family, she joined the workforce. Most of her employment years were spent in cooking. She worked for several years as a cook at the Vancouver Bible Institute, Vancouver, BC, returning to Selkirk, MB to take up the cook position at Tudor House Personal Care Home when it first opened in 1971. Upon retiring from Tudor House at age 62, she remarried and returned to White Rock, BC to reside there for several years. She and husband Frank, returned to Selkirk in 2002 to be closer to her children and their families. At the time of her passing she resided at Woodland Courts in Selkirk. A memorial service will be held to celebrate her life in the Grace Baptist Church at 321 Sophia Street (corner of Stanley Avenue and Sophia) in Selkirk, MB on Monday, September 27, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com
