JOSEPHINE (BINA) CLEGHORN (nee JOHNSON) May 15, 1929 - October 5, 2010 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our Mother, Amma (Grandmother), and friend Bina Cleghorn on October 5, 2010 at the age of 81 years old at Riverview Health Centre, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. She will be lovingly remembered by her children Blaine (Joan), Kevin (Julie), Deb (Rob Charlesworth), and Kathy (Ralph Schultz), grandchildren Brett and Scott, Kristen and Jacqie, Brynn and Jamie, and Alec, Sam and Chase. She will be forever missed by her brother Simbi, sister Johnnie (Bill Silvester), sister-in-law Joan (Tom Payne), many nieces and nephews, and valued friends. She was predeceased by her loving husband Gordon in 2005, her parents J.B. and Josebina Johnson and brothers and sisters (Barney, Helgi, Laura, Joey, Runa, and Pauline). Mom grew up in Gimli, living on her family farm, and attended the local schools. One summer, at the age of 16, she met her future husband Gord, while she was working as a Soda Jerk in the local Gimli store. After several years of dating and moving to Winnipeg, she worked a few years at the Eaton's downtown store until she married Dad on May 22, 1954. Shortly thereafter she became a stay at home mom when the first of four children arrived the next year. She was an active volunteer at the many schools where her children attended and was always there for them. She remained active until the last few months of her life. She will be forever remembered for her note taking and many phone conversations that took place each day as well as having the uncanny knack of catching the dust before it actually reached the carpet and for reaching for your glass to wash before you had finished your last sip. Those were just a few of the things that made us love her the most. Mom was the centre of the Cleghorn Universe and always looked after every one of her family. You always knew that Mom would be there for you. Her life was lived for others, full of love and kindness displayed daily towards her friends and family. Thanks to the doctors who assisted in her care in the last few months, Dr. Van Jaarsveld, Dr. Beshir, Dr. Crawford and Dr. Prewal. Thanks to the nurses at Riverview who provided such wonderful comfort and care during her last few weeks. In particular Sabrina, Helen, Karla, Ashley, Linda, Caroline, Marlene and student nurses Jessica, Cory and Lisa. A special thank you to all the home care workers who touched her heart and became like family, in particular Mavis, Kerry, Toni, Rahel and Gigi. Thank you to Mom's Home Care and Palliative Care Coordinators Leona and Mary for assisting with everything along the way and her palliative care nurse Louise, who provided amazing support to both Mom and the family. As per Mom's wishes, a private ceremony will take place for her family, however a celebration of her life will take place at a later date for friends and family to gather and share their memories. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Riverview Palliative Care Unit at One Morley Ave., Winnipeg, Manitoba R3L 2P4 or Cancer Care Manitoba at 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9. You can shed tears that she is gone Or you can smile because she has lived. You can close your eyes and pray that she'll come back Or you can open your eyes and see all she's left. Your heart can be empty because you can't see her Or it can be full of the love you shared. You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday. You can remember her and only that she's gone Or you can cherish her memory and let it live on. You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back Or you can do what she'd want; Smile, open your eyes, love and go on.
