JUDITH ISABEL CARNEGIE (GRANNY) (GILLIS) It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend Judy, October 12, 2010 at the Gimli Community Health Centre. Judy will be lovingly remembered by her beloved husband Robert, her daughters Lesley, Nicole (Cory), grandsons Evan and Nolan, her son Glenn, sister Kathleen Goodwin, sister-in-law Hazel (Bill) Baxter, brother-in-law Ian (Edith) Carnegie, many nieces and nephews, cousins, special cousin Norma (Mike) Pierce, and many friends in Winnipeg, Gimli and across Canada. She was predeceased by her mother and father Mary and Percy Gillis, brother-in-law Peter Goodwin and cousin David Lyon. Born in Moncton, NB, where she grew up and developed her love for beaches and the ocean. She graduated from U.N.B. with a Bachelor of Arts degree and then furthered her studies at Fredricton Teacher's College. Judy began an adventure out west, teaching in Edmonton, AB for a while and in 1962 started a teaching career in Winnipeg at Andrew Manarsky School where she taught for eight years. She joined a mixed curling league and met and fell in love with Robert and they were married in Campbelton, NB July 31, 1965. For the next 20 years Judy devoted herself to making a home, and raising three children. She encouraged her children to explore many different interests such as music, dance and sports, in which she took an active part as team manager, cheerleader and of course chauffeur. Judy shared her love of the beach and as a family we had many great vacations to the beaches in the Maritimes, camping throughout Manitoba and other parts of Canada. A more permanent location was established at Spruce Sands on Lake Winnipeg where many great summers were spent. After the children were grown up Judy enrolled at Red River College and obtained the designation of library technician, after which she returned to the workforce at the Manitoba Museum of Man and Nature, where she worked for ten years before retiring in 2000. Judy and Robert retired to Husavick (south of Gimli), where they could be close to beaches. There she was able to pursue her many hobbies of reading, walking, cross country skiing, skating, curling and recently quilting. She was a member of the Herb Society and served on the executive for many years. She joined the Gimli Garden Club and volunteered at the Gimli Hospital gift shop. Judy and Robert joined the Winnipeg Beach United Church where Judy sang in the choir and served on the church board as Secretary. She was a wonderful Grandmother who always made time for her grandchildren. Granny lovingly opened the doors to camp Husavick for Evan and Nolan, where they all enjoyed the campouts, playing on the beach, and going for adventure walks together. She has shown us by example how to be successful in relationships, wealthy in friends, and rich in life experiences. We will miss her warm smile, enthusiasm and adventurous spirit. We would like to thank family and friends who supported Judy with visits, cards, food and gifts during her illness. A special thank you to the staff at St. Boniface CancerCare Unit, St. Boniface General Hospital Ward 3B, and Gimli Community Health Centre for the support they provided Judy. A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 15, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. in the Winnipeg Beach United Church. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation (Ovarian Cancer Detection), 675 McDermot Ave., Room ON1160, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9. Gilbart Funeral Home, Gimli in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com
