YORAM HAMIZRACHI EAST COL. RET. I.D.F. It is with deep sadness the family announces the passing of their dearly loved Husband, Abba and Sabba on Wednesday, October 13, 2010 at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg at age 68. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Carol Merhav East; sons, Ron (Shirli), Dan (Kerry), and his daughter Tahl; grandsons, Shai and Golan, Trae and Justin and Ariel; mother Judith Raffaeli; father Joseph Mizrachi; sisters Shifra Tobiash; niece Abigail. Yoram is also survived by his first wife, mother of his children and lifelong friend, Beate Zahn and her spouse Joan Zahn. He was predeceased by his grandparents Opa Heinrich (Yechiel) and Mutti Ida Tobiash. Yoram was born in Jerusalem, Israel on February 20, 1942. He worked for many years as a newspaper, radio and TV journalist for Israeli and foreign media in Israel and abroad (South Africa, Iran, Turkey, Egypt and Germany). He also spent many years of his life in the service of the Israeli Defense Force (IDF). As a young draftee he joined a paratrooper unit and later, as a reserve officer, took part in the 1967 Battle of Jerusalem during the Six-Days War. After the war of Atonement in 1973, he moved with his family to northern Israel where he rejoined the IDF and became the first Israeli commander of the now defunct South Lebanon Security Belt (from Mount Hermon in the east to the Mediterranean in the west). Yoram immigrated to Canada (Winnipeg) in 1982 with his then wife, Beate, and their three children. For five years he held the position of Community Development Officer at the Little Grand Rapids Reserve. Upon returning to Winnipeg he lectured in the Department of Continuing Education at the University of Winnipeg. He also authored two novels, The Golden Lion and the Sun and The Cedar and the Star . A memorial service will be held at Temple Shalom on Friday, October 15, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. In accordance with his wishes his ashes will be taken to Israel at a later date where an additional memorial service will be held and his ashes sprinkled in his favourite locations throughout the country. Temple Shalom and Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens are in charge of arrangements. Donations can be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society.
