MARY HUDSON Mary Elizabeth Hudson, beloved mother and grandmother, died peacefully on October 19, 2010 after a brief illness. In a wonderfully active life of 84 years, Mary was a school librarian, an avid reader, an origami artist and teacher, a choir member, and a dedicated volunteer at her church. Mary was born in Portishead, England. In 1946 she sailed to the United States to marry her wartime sweetheart, Robert Hudson. The family moved to Winnipeg in 1964, where she and Bob raised three children. Mary had a passion for books and reading. A volunteer position in the local elementary school led to a long career working in school libraries. She became an expert on children's literature and belonged to two book clubs in the later years of her life. Church involvement was also very important to Mary. She was a long-standing member of Fort Garry United Church where she was active in her unit, served on the funeral committee and, not surprisingly, occupied the position of church librarian. She was also an enthusiastic member of the church choir. Mary was devoted to her family. She was always a strong, loving support to her three children. She had four grandchildren whom she loved dearly. She was always interested and involved in their activities and never hesitated to give them a ride, a snack, or a listening ear when they needed one. Her extended family always included a little dog, and her dear little Cairn Terrier, Jenny, will miss her very much. Mary leaves behind a sister, Rachel; children, David (Gail), Ann (John Friesen) and John; grandchildren Nathanael (Louisa), Olwyn, Caleb (Brittney) and Laura. She lost her beloved husband Bob in 2002. The family would especially like to thank the nursing staff, doctors and health care aides on the 6E ward of St. Boniface Hospital for their kind and respectful care. While Mary supported many charities, the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Humane Society were two she held very dear. Friends who wish are invited to donate to either of these charities in her memory. A celebration of Mary's life will be held at Fort Garry United Church (800 Point Rd.) on Saturday, October 23 at 2:30 p.m.
