JOHN G. KARASEVICH, L.L.B. With deep sorrow we announce the passing of John Gregory Karasevich on Wednesday, October 20, 2010 with his family at his side. Left to cherish John's memory is Marla, his wife of 45 years, daughter Marena (Terry), son John Jr. (Jill), sister Joan (August), brothers Gerald (Susan) and Gordon (Janice), aunt Mae Chwaluk, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, Marie and John Karasevich QC. John was born in Winnipeg on January 19, 1940 and grew up in the North End, graduating from St. John's High School. During his early years at university, John received his Queen's Commission as a 2nd Lieutenant, serving as a Reserve Forces officer with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles. He attended the University of Manitoba, graduating with a law degree in 1965 and received his Call to the Bar in Manitoba the same year. For many years John practiced with his father and for a short time with his brother, Gerald. Most recently John was senior partner with the firm of Karasevich, Windsor, Jenion, Hedley LLP. John was an expert on life-lease projects of which the first was St. Michael's Villa Inc. John was a Past President of the Folk Arts Council of Winnipeg Inc. and was mayor of the Kiev Pavilion in 1978; was a past president of the Ukrainian Professional and Business Club of Winnipeg, also of the Ukrainian Professional and Business Federation of Canada; and a past director of the Canadian Foundation for Ukrainian Studies. Over the years he served on various other boards and held many executive positions. Over the years, John was an avid reader, enjoyed hunting, music, theatre, wine-making, swimming in his pool, and was involved in politics. In addition to traveling extensively, John and Marla enjoyed many happy times with their family on Marco Island, Florida and as Gull Lakers . John will be remembered as a gentleman and a man of character. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral, 115 McGregor St. on Monday October 25, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. with Rt. Rev. Msgr. Mitrat Michael Buyachok officiating. Service will conclude at the church. Special thanks to all the doctors and staff who cared for John during his brief illness. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9.
