JOHN LOEWEN John Loewen, with his wife Gertrude at his side, passed away on October 25, 2010 at the age of 68 after a seven month battle with cancer. John was born on September 5, 1942 in Schoenau, Ukraine to Wilhelm and Anna Loewen. When John was five years old he immigrated to the Chaco, Paraguay with his mother and two brothers, Willy and Henry. After eight hard years in Paraguay they were able to immigrate to Canada, settling in Winnipeg. In 1961 John joined Randall Plumbing and Heating Ltd. in Winnipeg, earning his Steamfitters journeyman papers in 1965. He fell in love with Gertrude Epp and they were married on June 17, 1967. They were blessed by the birth of twin boys, Konrad and Karl on January 22, 1969, and then a daughter Laura on November 11, 1971. In 1971 John joined Derksen Plumbing and Heating, working for them until the end of 1986 when he decided to start his own business, Loewen Mechanical Ltd. John is predeceased by his mother and father. He is survived by his wife Gertrude; children: Konrad (Karen) of Morden, and their children Samantha and Mackenzie; Karl (Melanie) of Winnipeg, and their children Kyla, Kelcie and Kurtis; and Laura (Henry) Kornelsen of Winnipeg, and their children Jordan and Vanessa; and his two brothers Willy and Henry. A public viewing will take place on Wednesday, October 28, 2010 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main St., Winnipeg. A celebration of John's life will take place on Friday, October 29, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at the McIvor Avenue Mennonite Brethren Church, 200 McIvor Avenue, Winnipeg. The family would like to thank Dr. Ray Martens, the doctors and nurses at CancerCare for the phenomenal care that John received, and Anne Ediger his Palliative Care nurse for her compassion and gentleness in John's last days.
