ALFRED ERNEST MATHER 1918 - 2010 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dear father, grandfather, uncle and friend, Alfred Mather on October 24, 2010. Alf leaves us to join his departed loved ones: his wife Gerry, parents George and Catherine (nee Stephen), brother George, and grandson David. Remaining to forever cherish Alf's memory are his children Tim, and Susan (David) and grandchildren Christopher, Collette, Colin and Amy. Alf was born July 27, 1918 in Winnipeg and grew up in the Wolseley area. Alf possessed a life long passion for fitness and was an avid participant in numerous team and individual sports. Even into his late 80s he swam three times a week at the Rady Centre with his work out partner Phil. Alf loved people and was a fiercely loyal and true friend that could be counted on during both good and bad times. Whether from his childhood, participating in athletics, serving in the Air Force, his career in the furniture business, or being a piper Alf formed countless friendships that he cherished and valued very much. For those who knew Alf, they considered themselves fortunate to have him as a friend. Alf met and married Gerry Johnson in 1953 and together they started a life and raised their family in Fort Garry. Alf built their home on Riley Crescent and was able to live there with great pride until his passing. Alf and Gerry loved to get away to somewhere warm in the winter with their most memorable vacations being with friends in Hawaii. Gerry's sudden passing just two months shy of their 50th Wedding Anniversary left a void in Alf's life that remained until a few days ago when he left to go be with her once again. He loved and missed her terribly. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made in Alf's memory to a charity of their choice. A memorial service will be held at the Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, on Saturday, October 30 at 2:00 p.m. He was the best dad ever Chapel Lawn 885-9715
