MICHAEL KUBY Peacefully, on November 2, 2010, Michael Kuby passed away at the age of 93. He joins in Heaven his wife Helen, parents Nicholas and Theodora, brother John, sisters Mary (Vern) Stuhr, Anne and Ehasa, Helen's parents Frank, Anielka and Anna Plustwa, brothers-in-law Carl (Linda) and Stanley Plustwa, Nick Chomniak, sister-in-law Jean (Roman) Kachur and grandson Steven Ralph. Michael leaves behind to cherish his memory, son David (Patricia), daughter Valerie (Cecil), daughter Judy (Robin); grandchildren Ashley (Derek), Stephanie, Jonathan, Alexis, Amy (Dale and soon to be first great-grandchild), Teresa, Alycia and Daniel. Also surviving are sister Betty Chomniak, brother Victor (Liz) Kuby, brother-in-law Walter (Jean) Plustwa and sister-in-law Janet Plustwa, many nieces and nephews and good friends. Born on March 31, 1917 on the farm at Ethelbert. As the eldest son, Mike farmed with his father until moving to Winnipeg in 1947 with his wife Helen whom he married in 1946. In 1951 he heard that Canadian Pacific Railway was hiring labourers, he applied but was quietly told by the man interviewing him, a fellow Ukrainian, to come back next week when C.P. would be hiring apprentices. This gamble paid off with the much better job of machinist helper. Michael stayed with C.P.R. in the Weston Shops until his retirement in 1980. Michael was a dedicated member of Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Church. He was actively involved in many social groups at Holy Eucharist such as bowling, choir, B.U.C. and participated in perogy making and helping at Bingo until he was 90 years old. When he was no longer able to attend mass at church, he kept his faith in God and attended different masses held at Middlechurch. Alone after his wife Helen passed away in 1991, Michael, late in life got the travelling bug. Trips to Alaska, the Maritimes, California, and Florida, culminated in a trip to independent Ukraine. He impressed his hosts with his command of the beautiful classical Ukrainian language. Proud and independent, Michael had to be almost carried from his well kept East Kildonan home to his new home, Middlechurch Personal Care Home for the past year. Thanks to the staff for their care and compassion and for making his time more comfortable while there. Prayers will be said on Friday, November 5 at 6:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Saturday, November 6 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Church, south east corner of Watt and Munroe. You were always there when we needed you No task too great or small With a loving heart and a willing hand For us you did them all. Thanks for the years you gave us, And for the precious times we shared, We only pray when you left us You knew how much we cared.
