EVELYN D. COX Peacefully in her 97th year, Evelyn passed away at The Convalescent Home of Winnipeg. She was a gentle, compassionate and elegant lady in the truest sense of the word. Evelyn was born in Brandon on December 29, 1913, she was the only child of Frederick and Signe. She taught in a one room school in Woodside, MB. Moving to Winnipeg with her parents in 1953, she attended Normal School and won the Governor General's Medal. She continued her teaching career at various schools in the Winnipeg School Division. Evelyn was the principal of Riverview and then Lord Roberts School, until her retirement in 1975. She lived with her parents whom she lovingly cared for in the family home. As an educator, Evelyn was firm and efficient yet understanding and fair. A hush would come over students (and staff) when she lead weekly assemblies. Leading by example, she empowered both students and staff to do their best. She trusted her teachers to use their own initiative with children, but was always ready with support and advice. Evelyn supported new approaches in teaching, as seen in the opening of the new Lord Roberts School building in 1969. While accepting new approaches, she recognized and expected the basic fundamentals of good teaching to occur. She was always animated when children were about, whether at work or at play. More recently, this joy of children was expressed during a visit to Lord Roberts where the Library had been named in her honour. She had a twinkle in her eye, and always had a ready smile. Throughout her long and distinguished career in Education, Evelyn was actively involved in many professional and social organizations. She loved any occasion for a party and spoke particularly of enjoying dances at the Marlborough Hotel in her younger years. She was a member of Westminster Church and sang in the choir. Evelyn had a mean golf swing, played the piano, enjoyed travel and the company of friends in a variety of settings. Evelyn was afflicted with Alzheimer's disease in her later years, but enjoyed outings in the community with her visitor companion, Pam. She loved being outdoors and enjoyed the birds in the court yard at the Convalescent Home where she was treated with respect, dignity and loved. Thank you Staff, for your care and compassion. You were a family for her. A Service of Remembrance will be held at The Convalescent Home of Winnipeg on Tuesday, November 30 at 10:00 a.m., officiated by Father Klassen of St Michaels and All Angels' Church.
