MAX FREED It is with sadness that we announce the death of Max Freed on October 25, 2010 at the age of 98 years. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Marion in 1974. He was also predeceased by his brother Ben, and sister Mildred Schulman. Max is survived by his brother Joe (Ruth), sons Marshall (Karen) and Sam (Nit), grand-children Tyler, Bryn, and Matthew, great-grand- children Kyla and Micah. He is also survived by his loving companion of many years, Cindy Penman. Max graduated from St. John's High School as School President. While in high school he loved sports and was a successful football player and track and field athlete. His commitment to sport continued as an adult. In 1941, Max was a founding member of the Glendale Golf Club and was a co-owner who brought the Goldeyes team to Winnipeg in the 1950s. His lifelong passion for thoroughbred horse racing and breeding is legendary. He was an icon at the race track and made his mark in the racing industry in Winnipeg and as well as Canada wide. As owner of Meadowbrook Stables and then Maxell King Stables he bred and raced hundreds of winners in Winnipeg as well as across Canada. Max served as the President of the Horseman's Benevolent and Protective Association and was a founding member of the Thoroughbred Breeders Association, the predecessor of today's Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society. He was highly respected and loved by his Assiniboine Downs family . His enthusiasm and commitment is well documented and dates back to the time when Polo Park was a racetrack and not a shopping mall. The Jewish community was of great importance to Max. He was a founding member of the Montefiore Club in 1948; a founding member of the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba in 1964; and was actively involved with the Y.M.HA. and the Bridge Club. In his business life Max was determined, diverse and successful. In the garment industry he owned Winnipeg based Hercules Manufacturing. His business industry included the Skyline Hotel in Vancouver, one of Canada's first airport hotels, Custom (Best Brand) Meat Packing and Friendly Family Farms Poultry operation. Despite the many accomplishments that defined so much of Max's life, his family will always carry first and foremost in their hearts, his legacy of honesty, determination, passion, compassion, generosity and human kindness. He touched so many people in his lifetime, changing lives for the better, quietly and discreetly. Max's most famous benefactor was a very young Monty Hall, who eventually shared publicly the story of Max's gift to him. To quote Monty Hall, - no matter how high one climbs on the ladder of success we will ultimately be remembered for how we helped those less fortunate than ourselves . Max is our inspiration and role model. His family is thankful for his beautiful life and love, and for sharing it so unconditionally with each and everyone one of us. A funeral service was held on Thursday, October 28, 2010, at Shaarey Zedek Synagogue with interment at Shaarey Zedek Cemetery. Pallbearers were Tyler Freed, Bryn Freed, Matthew Freed, Stephen Freed, Mark Freed and Perry Schulman. If so desired, donations in Max's memory may be made to a charity of your choice.

  • Thank you for helping Monty Hall who helped others be upbeat in this world of confusion. - Posted by: Kate (Stranger) on: Jan 14, 2018

  • My son recently sent me an email about Monty Hall and one of the clips told about how Max Freed had financed his education. I realized that it was the same Max Freed I had known as a child because he was the best friend of my uncles, Charlie and Sammy Krupp. My family lived in Houston, Texas but each summer my Mom, Ann, and I would visit Winnipeg and it always included a visit with the Freed family. I have many fond memories of being with Max and Marion, and still have (over 60 years later) the beautiful crystal plate that was their wedding gift to my husband and me. Although it is nearly 6 years since his passing, I would like to offer my condolences and say that his memory is 'for a blessing'and it is obvious that he had much joy and 'nachas' from his family. I know that Sam was named for my dear uncle Sammy, who passed away much too soon after a tragic accident in 1948. My husband Larry and I send warm regards to all Max's family.
