BARRON ROGERS After a brief and courageous battle with cancer, Barry Rogers passed away at Grace Hospital on Wednesday, November 3, 2010. He leaves to mourn his passing, Betty, his wife of 46 years, daughter Beth (Al), son Paul (Sofia), grandchildren Ethan and Lauren Burke, brother-in-law Clive Jarvis (Inez), Aunt Pearl Enefer as well as many cousins and friends. Barry was ever mindful of his good fortune in finding Betty and expressed his gratitude to her frequently and sincerely. Family was of utmost importance to Barry. He took great pride in the successful careers of both Beth and Paul as well as joy in their choices of life partners (Al and Sofia). He enjoyed watching Ethan and Lauren grow into the unique young people they are and was confident of the bright futures that lie ahead of them. He was excited to know that Paul will soon become a father. Barry's family was completed by Eros and Loki, his beloved cats, his boys . Barry was born in Winnipeg in 1939. He grew up in the West End, attending General Wolfe, Daniel McIntyre, United College and the University of Manitoba. He earned a B.Sc., B.Ed. and M.Ed. (Counselling). He taught for two years in Killarney before joining St. James School Division where he met and married Betty. He remained with the school division throughout his career as a teacher, guidance counsellor and vice principal. Retiring in 1993, Barry and Betty embarked on a series of travel adventures. They enjoyed motor trips throughout Canada and the United States, overseas tours and most recently cruises on the Mediterranean and Panama Canal. After many years of summer camping trips with the children, Barry and Betty settled into cottage life at Sandy Hook. This afforded opportunities to enjoy the songbirds at his many feeders and eventually led to a grudging cease fire with the red squirrel. Gardening, casual entertaining, and hours spent playing scrabble, crib and dominos filled the summer months for many good years. During the winter months, when not traveling, Barry socialized with his buddies at Friday Breakfast and Wednesday Lunch. During his adult life, Barry belonged to a number of bridge clubs where he enjoyed the company, if not the game itself. Throughout his life, Barry demonstrated his love of people by making connections wherever he went. Barry delighted friends with embellished tales, making the most mundane event a captivating story. His witty speaking style conveyed warmth, insight and a penchant for backing the underdog. Betty, Beth and Paul wish to express sincere thanks to the wonderful and supportive staff at Grace Hospital. Equally significant were the frequent visits of Barry's many friends. Barry engaged in and enjoyed these visits to the very last day and they were a tremendous comfort to his family and a testament to the life he led. A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, November 8, 1:00 p.m., at Kirkfield Park United Church, located on the corner of Kirkfield Street and McBey Avenue. A private graveside service will have taken place. Memorial Donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society or the United Church Mission and Service Fund, care of Kirkfield Park United Church.
