PHILIP MECHLAIR It is with heavy hearts that the family announces the passing of Philip Mechlair at the age of 84 on November 3, 2010. He leaves behind his loving wife Ann of 62 years and his three daughters: Tanis (Greg) Henrickson, Colleen (Glenn) Armstrong and Michele (Gary) Siemens. Grandchildren: Marcia (Gary) Henrickson, Derek Henrickson, Cheryl Henrickson, Scott (Wendy) Armstrong, Christine (George) Golding-Siemens, Shawna Armstrong and Melissa Siemens. Great-Grandchildren: Cassidy, Emma, Caitlin, Tristyn, Logan, Sarah, Evangeline. Born and raised in Brandon MB, Phil enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1943. Among his honors, Phil received the France Germany Star. He also served in liberated Holland, where he had fond memories of the warm welcome from the townsfolk of Davinder. Returning to Canada after the war, Phil re-enlisted in the army with hopes of a lifelong career. He met his wife Ann on her birthday in 1947. They married in 1948. In 1950, as part of the military response, he assisted in the Winnipeg Flood efforts and as a result of an accident while sandbagging, he spent the next three years in Deer Lodge Hospital recuperating. Upon medical discharge from the Army, Phil pursued service and management careers in the automotive industry. He was a great mechanic and came to the aid of many friends. As a young man, Phil enjoyed motorcycle racing, especially hill climbing competitions, and throughout his life a nice bike going by still caught his eye. Fishing was a favourite pastime and he built his own boat. Later in life he refinished furniture for family and friends. Phil also volunteered as a dog walker at the Humane Society. A loyal Legionnaire, Past-President of Elmwood #9, Phil was made a life member for his tireless work. It is only fitting that his memorial service will take place at the Elmwood Legion, 920 Nairn Ave. on Monday, November 8 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Winnipeg Humane Society or the Elmwood Legion Bursary fund would be appreciated.
