J. MARGOT CHESTER (nee BROWN) January 15, 1916 - October 30, 2010 Peacefully, in the loving arms of her daughter Charlotte, Margot went quietly into that good night. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Tommy (2002), her parents, Francis and Elsie Brown, and three dear brothers: Francis, Phillip and Donald. She leaves to mourn, her three children: Carole (Bob), Ashley (Janet) and Charlotte (Sid). Mimi will be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren: Dayna (Dylan), Travis, Michelle (Addison), Kate (Glyn) and Corey, and great-grandchildren: Chloe, Marcus, Celyn and Anna. Margot is also survived by three brothers: Alan (Juliet), Ken (Pam), and Keith (Claire). Margot was born in Birmingham, England and immigrated to Canada with her family at the age of six. They settled in the Sturgeon Creek area of St. James where she received her education. On October 24, 1936 at St. Andrew's Anglican Church Margot married Thomas P. Chester. The Chesters were one of the early pioneer families of Charleswood and Margot and Tommy made their home in that community. With Tommy as Club Professional, Margot soon became an active member of Charleswood Golf Club. She espoused the game with enthusiasm, supporting her husband's career and forging lifelong friendships. After the birth of her three children, Margot pursued her love of writing and her talents were soon recognized and she began writing professionally in the mid 1950s. Her long career in journalism began as the Charleswood correspondent for the St. James Leader in the form of her column entitled Varsity Viewings . Her writings quickly grew to include the news of St. James and by 1965 she was Editor of the St. James Assiniboia News. Her career grew quickly and she was soon Editor-In-Chief of many weekly Community newspapers, including: Metro One, The Lance, The Herald, The Times and the Thompson Times. During this time, Margot was also very actively involved in her communities. She was a founding member of the Charleswood Historical Society and the Charleswood Sketch Club. She was a member of the St. James Chamber of Commerce, The St. James Business and Professional Women's Association and many other local and political organizations. Margot became a member of St. Mary Anglican Church upon her marriage to Tommy in 1936. She was an active and supporting member of the Parish for 74 years. She served on various committees including the Altar Guild, Parish Council and Parish Newsletter. In 1997, Margot wrote a book on the history of St. Mary in celebration of the Parish's 75th Anniversary. With the exception of four years in Neepawa, Margot spent the remainder of her life in her beloved Charleswood and St. James-Assiniboia communities...she served them well. The family wishes to thank the staffs of the Charleswood Care Centre and West Park Manor where Margot resided for the past four years. Their efforts to make her as comfortable as possible are greatly appreciated. A celebration of Margot's life will be held at St. Mary Anglican Church, 3830 Roblin Blvd. (corner of Haney Street) on Wednesday, November 10 at 2:30 p.m., the Rev. Jack Risk to officiate. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Mary Anglican Church Memorial Fund would be appreciated.
