LILA EILEEN EAST (nee BROWNE) Lila Eileen East (Browne) died Sunday, October 31, 2010, in Fort Erie, ON at the age of 101, with her beloved daughter Betty at her side. Lila was born on her family's farm between Kitscoty and Marwayne, AB; she was the youngest of John and Elizabeth (Newman) Browne's six children. Lila grew up with her closest playmates often being her nieces and nephews, some of whom were closer to her in age than her elder siblings. Lila worked as a teacher until she met and married her husband Dr. Ellis East. In 1950, after traveling and living in Alberta and British Columbia, they settled with their young family in Winnipeg, MB. Throughout the next 50 years, Lila raised her children, taught, traveled extensively, gardened and enjoyed family times with her son Neil, his wife Sheila and their children. Particular highlights were traveling to visit family, the marriages of grandchildren and the births of great-grandchildren. During her years in Winnipeg, Lila made many friends of all ages who remember her with love and respect. In 2000, just after her 90th Birthday, Lila moved to Niagara, ON / Pittsford, NY to live with her daughter Elizabeth and her husband Dr. Dean Lockwood. These 11 years with Betty saw Lila spending time with her Lockwood grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as continuing to enjoy her love of travel, gardening and animals. Lila lived an active and adventure filled life and her 100th Birthday Celebration was filled with laughter and great memories as many friends, Alberta relatives, along with her daughter-in-law Sheila, the East grandchildren and great-grandchildren, enjoyed a wonderful weekend of parties hosted by Betty. Lila is survived by her daughter Elizabeth (Pittsford, NY / Niagara, ON), daughter-in-law, Sheila (Winnipeg), sister-in-law, Nell East Charlwood (Don) (Melbourne, Australia), her East grandchildren: Katie (Shane Stewart), Paul (Carol McCullough), Sean, Mary (Bill Migie), her Lockwood grandchildren: Andrew (Karen), Craig (Jennifer), Wendy (Dario Calia) and her 16 great-grandchildren; as well as numerous, nieces, nephews, and great-nieces / nephews. Lila was predeceased by her husband Ellis (1957), son Neil (1984), son-in-law, Dean (2004), and siblings: Hilda, Charles, Don, Newman and Iva. There are no plans for a memorial at this time; tree planting celebrations will take place in the spring. For additional information, please contact Katie at lila.east@mymts.net.
