EFFIE HAFIA KOWALIUK (nee HRECHKA) Effie Kowaliuk, aged 88 years, passed away peacefully with her family at her side on Thursday, November 4, 2010 at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, after a brief illness. Effie was born in Vita, Manitoba on December 15, 1921 to Wasyl and Maria Hrechka. She was raised in Vita, Manitoba and married William (Bill) Kowaliuk on March 20, 1943. Throughout their marriage they lived in Winnipeg, Thunder Bay and St. Catharines. Effie is survived by her daughter Alice (Gerald) Chony of Thunder Bay; her son Bob (Cecile) Kowaliuk of Calgary; grandsons, Kevin (Alison), Terry (Deborah); granddaughters, Dawn (Lizette), Tina (Dwayne); great-grand-children, Evan, Kaitlyn, Brad, Tiffany, Sheldon; brother Mike (Joyce) Hrechka of Berlin, Maryland; sister-in-law Lil Atamanchuk of Winnipeg, plus numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her loving husband Bill (May 30, 1982), her parents, brother John Hrechka and sister Nellie Susik.
