JAMES PULLAR THOMSON, D.D.G.M. April 12, 1926 - November 6, 2010 Passed away peacefully with his sister at his side at Concordia Hospital. Predeceased by his beloved wife Adeline; their favourite pet dog Fergie; parents, George and Mary Thomson; sisters, Mary Waterman, Phyliss Crawford, Florence Russell; brother George Thomson. George is survived by his sisters, Margaret Reynolds, Elsie Bellamy; brother Smith (Glynis) Thomson and many nieces and nephews. Jim served in the Army C.A.D.C. attached to the R.C.A.F. for 18 months during the Second World War. His service led to his lifelong membership in the Royal Canadian Legion. He served as president of Elmwood Legion Branch #9 six times between 1994 and 2004. During this period Jim was instrumental in ensuring the Branch's stable financial operation. As the Deputy Zone Commander and Zone Commander of Zone 64 Royal Canadian Legion, Jim was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, the highest honour bestowed by the Royal Canadian Legion. After the war, Jim returned to Eaton's where he worked for 47 years in the watch and jewellery repair department retiring in 1988 as head of these departments. He was a past president of the Manitoba Jewellers Association, past president of Eaton's Bowling and Curling Clubs, and chairman of the Eaton's Recreational Committee. Jim remained very active in the community after his retirement. He was very proud of his involvement as a founding member of the Eaton's Retirement Club. With the help of co-founder Reg Hart, and many other retired members, he established the club that remains active today with 400 members. More recently Jim served three years as vice president (finance) of the Concordia Village Seniors Complex. Throughout his life, Jim knew the importance that education plays in our young people's lives. This led to his involvement as a director at Red River Community College. Additionally, Jim has made arrangements for three scholarships to be awarded annually in perpetuity to deserving students at Isaac Brock School. These scholarships will be awarded in memory of James and Adeline Thomson. R.W. Bros. James Thomson has been a member in good standing of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons for the past 20 years. He was a past Master of Fidelity Lodge 14 and Past District Deputy Grand Master (D.D.G.M.) of District 11, 2002 on the Grand Register of Masons, Manitoba. As a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Jim has requested that his friends and family join together for a memorial service at Thomson Funeral Home on Friday, November 12, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. This will be followed by a reception at the Elmwood Legion, Branch #9, 920 Nairn, Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jim's name to either Riverview Hospital 3East or Concordia Hospital Oncology Unit.
