Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySTEPHEN SOLVASON January 4, 1918 November 10, 2010 Passed away peacefully with the incredible spirit that shaped his life at the Dr. Al Hogg Pavilion in White Rock on November 10, 2010. A wonderful and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend, Steve was an inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing him. Steve was predeceased by his beloved wife of 63 years, Jean, in May 2008, and carried on bravely without the love of his life. Steve was also predeceased by five of his siblings, his sons Ian and Gregory, and grandsons Colin, Kenneth and Stefan. Lovingly remembered by his remaining 4 siblings, his daughter Gloria Lord (Rick) of Winnipeg, son Robert Solvason (Maria Teresa) of the Philippines, daughter Ishbel Solvason-Wiebe (Kevin) of Ottawa, and daughter Louise Raffa (David) of North Vancouver, 11 grand-children, 15 great-grandchildren, and many other family and friends. Steve was always a strong and active member of his community. Born in Hayland, Manitoba, and growing up in the north country, he had many adventures as a young man as he fished the northern lakes. He then moved to Winnipeg, beginning his career with CP/CNR Rail. There, he met and married Jean Stevenson and the couple enjoyed many happy family years in Winnipeg and Gimli, before moving to White Rock in 1986. Steve lived his life with an exemplary and deep understanding of faith, hope, honesty and promise. He loved adventure. And he embraced hard work and challenges with an indomitable spirit and great humility and kindness to all. He was a community leader in many organizations - from the church to the square dance club to Joppa Lodge No. 112, Gizeh Temple and the Peace Arch Shriners Club. Steve also belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star, serving as the worthy patron of Selkirk and White Rock Chapters. Steve always worked diligently to make the world a better place. He never hesitated to stop to lend a hand to those who needed it. And his ability to stay positive, even in the face of great challenge, carried him through his entire life. Steve lived his life placing high importance on family, faith, support to others and doing right. He was a shining example of what a great man should be. We know that the world is a less bright star without him. Opa, may your soul have safe passage to Valhalla. A memorial service celebrating Steve's life will be held on Monday, November 15 at 1:00 p.m. at St. John's Presbyterian Church, 1480 George Street, White Rock, BC. An interment service will be held at a later date in Manitoba. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions may be made to a charity of your choice, in memory of Steve.
