SHIRLEY LEVINE Shirley Levine passed away peacefully on November 17, 2010 at the Simkin Centre at the age of 87. She is survived by her siblings Rebecca Rosner, Elkin and Doreen Rosenhek, Ruby and George Sideman, sisters-in-law Marion Laxer, Edith Rosenhek and Bernice and Joe Rissin. She is also survived by her children Karen Levine, Danny and Sandy Levine, her grandchildren Ruthanne and Greg, Jonah and Lynn, Keith and Victoria, Elizabeth, Melissa, and five great-grandchildren. Shirley was predeceased by her beloved husband of 56 years, Ervin Levine, her parents Arthur Lewis and Mindel Rosenhek, as well as her siblings Max Rosenhek, Ben Rosenhek, Hannah Zack and Sylvia Frankel. Shirley spent the early years of her life on a farm near Hirsch, SK. Shirley moved to Winnipeg with her siblings and mother after the death of her father. They had little money but learned to value the bonds of family and passed that value on to future generations. She met and fell in love with her husband Ervin working at Stall's as a button sewer and model at the age of 17. They married during the war and lived in Ervin's mother's home for the first 10 years of marriage. They pioneered in River Heights, building a home on Ash Street when their kids were young. Shirley was a wonderful home maker, a member of B'nai Brith, active in synagogue sisterhood, a Brownie troupe leader and an avid mah-jongg player. She worked with Ervin in their grocery store, Central Provisions, and at the downtown Eaton's China department for 14 years. In her golden years, she enjoyed quality time with her husband and being part of the lives of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, many relatives and dear friends. She will be missed as a source of love by the souls she touched. The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff of Weinberg 1, Simkin Centre and her companions: Tess, Nila, Alice, Matilda and the staff from Certified ILA. Funeral services were held on Friday, November 19, 2010 at the Chesed Shel Emes and the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery. Pallbearers: Danny Levine, Jonah Levine, Greg Smith, Ian Laxer, David Loftson and Mark Makarovsky. Honorary pallbearers: Sid Rosenhek and Benjamin Singer. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Simkin Centre Spiritual Care Fund, (204) 586-9781.
