KATHERINE RIEGER 1912 - 2010 Katherine (Janz) Rieger passed away peacefully after a brief illness at Rest Haven Nursing Home in Steinbach on Saturday, November 20, 2010 at the age of 98 years. Predeceased by her loving husband Sebastian in 2005, Katherine will be remembered by daughters: Sylvia (Melvin) Epp of Whitewater, Kansas, Deanna (Edward) Bohun, and Shirley (Arnold) Reimer, both of Winnipeg; grandchildren: James (Melanie) Bohun, Michael Reimer (Katherine Katsura), Dana Reimer, David (Sally) Epp, Terence (Amy) Epp; great-grandchildren: Thomas and Charles Epp, Samuel Bohun, Riley Epp; brothers: Walter and Alvin (Agnes); sisters-in-law: Anne Janz, Martini Janz, Nora Rieger, and many nieces and nephews. Katherine Rieger was born on July 15, 1912, in Steinbach, where she received her elementary and secondary education. She started teaching at age 17, the first several years in rural schools and then, after completing teacher training, three more years in Steinbach School District. She was married to Sebastian Rieger on July 28, 1935. They moved to the village of Rosenhof near Morris where Sebastian was teaching, and where they began their family and made many friends. In 1942 the Riegers moved to Steinbach, where Katherine did occasional substitute teaching, and Sebastian became a partner in Rieger Clothing. Katherine was also active in her church, as a Sunday School Teacher, a Deacon and in many of the women's groups of the Evangelical Mennonite Brethren Church, now Cornerstone Bible Church. Katherine and Sebastian always enjoyed travel. After retirement, they were able to take long trips across Canada and the U.S.A. as well as several international destinations, including a tour of Asia and to see Sylvia and her family in the Philippines. When Katherine's health began to fail, they moved from the family home on 2nd Street to Fernwood Place where they spent 12 active and contented years. In 2004 they both became residents of Rest Haven Nursing Home. The family expresses appreciation to Dr. Curtis Krahn, and to the staff of Rest Haven Nursing Home for their many kindnesses, dedication and professionalism in caring for Katherine, especially during her final illness. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 24, at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, 150 Penfeld Drive, Steinbach. Viewing will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 23 at the Chapel and prior to the service. Pallbearers will be James Bohun, Michael Reimer, Katherine Katsura, Dana Reimer, David Epp and Terence Epp. Interment at Steinbach Memorial Cemetery immediately after the service with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Haven Group Foundation (for Rest Haven Nursing Home), 177 Woodhaven Ave., Steinbach, MB R5G 1K7.
