IRMA SMITH (nee PIERRET) It is with deep sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing on Friday, November 19, 2010, of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother in her 94th year. She is lovingly remembered by her daughters Cyss Urban (Ralph) and Yvette Buchanan; grandchildren Debbie (Ken), Terri (Bob) and Monique (Dinos); great-grandchildren Brett, Amy, Alex and Jesse. She was predeceased by her parents, brothers, and youngest daughter Vivian. Born in France in 1916 where her parents and three brothers were hiding out during the First World War, they immigrated to Storthoaks, SK when Irma was three years old and took up farming. Her mother's passing when Irma was 11 launched her into her lifelong career and passion as a homemaker. She had always wanted to be a nurse but never had the opportunity, instead she took on the role of homemaker and later mother with devotion and eloquence. Irma, her husband, and two girls moved to Winnipeg before the birth of their third daughter where she later raised all three girls on her own. She was an excellent cook and baker. Family and friends have fond memories of the wonderful smells of her infamous cinnamon buns, pies and donuts; no one would ever leave with an empty stomach or without a nourished soul. Irma's life was devoted to caring for her daughters, family friends, and even fellow residents in the family apartment block. Later, when grandchildren were born that same devotion and care helped shape another generation. To know Irma Smith was to know being loved; even toward the end of her life when it could be difficult to understand her loving nature as a result of dementia, she still endeared many. From the moment she was born to her last breath Irma faced adversity with unwavering strength, courage and devotion. As per Irma's wishes, a private family service will be held. The family is beyond grateful for the loving support and excellent care which the staff of Calvary Place provided on a daily basis even when it could be difficult. A very special thank you to Father Stan who attended weekly to Irma's spiritual needs, and to Sandra Precourt who is not only a friend but treated Irma as if she was her own mother. Lord, we thank you for the gift of our mother/grandmother/great-grandmother and we release her to you. She had suffered long, but now knows peace and the triumphant grace of your Mercy and Love. May she hear your words, Well done my good and faithful servant ! Love her Lord into new everlasting life. In Jesus' name we pray.
