GUNTHER KURT APORIUS Gunther Kurt Aporius passed away peacefully with family at his side after a lengthy battle with prostate cancer Friday, November 19, 2010, a day after his 69th birthday. He was predeceased by his parents Gartner and Erika Aporius, and is survived by wife Brigitte, sons Roland and Michael (Elizabeth), daughter Susan (Bernard), grandchildren Amy, Cindy, Daniel and Wellington, and sisters Helga, Edith and Ursula. Gunther was born in Bromberg, then Germany, in 1941. As a young man, he traded as a chef and worked in hotels throughout Europe, where he met his wife Brigitte. They moved to Winnipeg in 1967, and he continued work as a chef at hotels and eventually the Government House. He was especially proud to have cooked for the Queen during the Royal Visit of 1970. Gunther then ran kitchens at Canada Packers, Parkside Ford, and briefly the restaurant in Camp Neustadt at Lake Winnipeg. We will always remember his knack for making the simplest dishes delicious. In his later years, he was happiest spending any spare moment at his cottage in Ottermere, Ontario, where he loved to hike, listen to his oom-pah-pah German music, ride his quad and take the boat for spins around the lake. He also loved the traditional happy hour with friends he made there. Family would like to give their sincere thanks to his doctors at CancerCare, the staff in the St. Boniface Hospital Palliative Care unit, and the caring nurses and students who made his last days as painless as possible at the Grace Hospice. He spoke so highly about all of you. We love you Dad. We love you Grandpa. We will miss you dearly. A private service will be announced soon and held in the coming weeks. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare and the Grace Hospice through the Grace Hospital Foundation.

  • Dear Michael, I'm so sorry, but I've read your response to my mail only a couple of minutes ago - a long time has passed since I've written my first one. I've given up hopes to get a response to be honest. Michael, if you want to contact me - here is my e-mail adress: lgpdst2367@hotmail.de I look forward to getting a mail from you. Best regards, Gabi Fleischmann from Winklarn/Muschenried (Germany) - Posted by: Gabi Fleischmann (perhaps a relative) on: Oct 19, 2014

  • Hello Gabi. I'm very interested to speak with you. How can I reach you? - Posted by: Michael Aporius (Son) on: Nov 11, 2013

  • Dear Aporius family, I've found this website here after having searched for members of the Aporius family. At first I would like to express my condolences for your great loss. It's always sad to lose a beloved family member. Secondly I would like to apologize for my bad English - I'm not a native speaker and therefore I'd like to ask you for your patience concerning this. Actually I wanted to tell you something about my family, and because I don't have your e-mail address I'll have to do this on this website - it's the only chance for me to get in touch with you. But let me tell you now: My mother's father was Otto Aporius who was born in Brondy near Bromberg. His family had to leave the area around Bromberg after World War 1 - the former German areas were occupied by Poland and the Germans had to leave. My grandfather got to know his girlfriend Frieda Lehmann, they fell in love, got engaged and she got pregnant with my mother Hanni, Lotte. Unfortunately before they could get married my grandfather Otto Aporius died so that my mother was born to her unmarried mother. My grandfather was only 29 years old when he died of pleurisy. Although my grandfather's parents (also Aporius) had no legal rights on their granddaughter (my mother Hanni) they cared for her and adopted her. They were very good to her - especially my grand grandmother was a very nice woman but she already died when my mother was 14 so that she had to go back to her real mother. From this day on my mother has always had the wish to find other Aporius family members and to get to know this part of the family. She is over 80 now and her health is not the best and therefore a wish came true if you were from her family. It would be so kind of you if you wrote back to me a short mail - or if you called me. God bless you. Best regards, Gabi Fleischmann from Germany. - Posted by: Gabi Fleischmann (perhaps a relative) on: Jan 17, 2013
