GEORGE WARKENTIN George Kornelius Warkentin passed away peacefully on November 23, 2010 at Meadowood Manor Personal Care Home, at the age of 91, to be with his Lord and Saviour. He is survived by his wife Elma (nee Penner), three daughters, one son and their families. He was predeceased by one son (George) in 1976, one grandson (Gordon) in 1973, two brothers and three sisters. George was born on June 14, 1919 in the village of Blumenfeld, Russia (Ukraine). He was the youngest of six children. During the Second World War he served in the Russian and German armies. In 1948, with the help of M.C.C., a relative, and a family friend, George immigrated to Canada. George married Elma in the Kleefeld E.M.C. Church on January 29, 1950. Their family includes four children: Sally (Gerald) Dereniwski, Ingrid (Gordon) Pirrie, Betty Whitehouse, Wes (Colleen) Warkentin; 10 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. As a family, they farmed in Silberfeld, MB for 15 years, and then in 1965 the family moved to Niverville. Throughout his working years, George was employed at Penner Tire and Rubber Company and Motor Coach Industries (MCI). In 1986, George and Elma retired in Steinbach. In his retirement years George was involved in ministry in the southern U.S.A. and the Baja, Mexico. Viewing will be held at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, 150 Penfeld Dr., Steinbach on Saturday, November 27, 2010 at 7:00 p.m., with a devotion to follow at 7:30 p.m. The funeral service will be held Sunday, November 28, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. at Evangel Chapel, 1073 St. Mary's Road, Winnipeg, MB. The interment will be at Hespeler Cemetery in Niverville. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made in George's memory to Union Gospel Mission, 320 Princess St., Winnipeg, MB R3B 3C7.
