KARLO REZNICEK July 28, 1929 - November 30, 2010 Karlo, affectionately known as Tata, was born in the former Yugoslavia. His parents were Katalin and Gyula and he had an older brother Gyula. As a child he attended boarding schools, with Christmas breaks and summers spent enjoying the wilderness around the Danube's banks. Hunting and fishing were his true loves, though he also excelled at school. In 1948, he became the sole family bread winner after the death of his father. Like his brother, he studied to become a civil engineer at Belgrade University. He fully dedicated himself to his studies and soon became an inspiration and support for other students. Among these students was Maria Daniel who borrowed his notes and paid a high price: they married in 1956. They had a son Karl in 1962. Karlo was a very energetic, ambitious man who sought and achieved leadership positions in the field of water resources management. In 1963 the family moved to Novi Sad where Karlo settled into the job of Technical Director of the Water Resources Development Fund of Vojvodina, supervising hundreds of development projects. Karlo was the Chief Flood Protection Engineer during the record 1965 Danube flood. Later, Karlo earned a Ph.D. and taught at the Faculty of Civil Engineering at Subotica until his retirement. In 1992 Karlo and Maria joined their son in Winnipeg where they took on the change with much zeal. They became building caretakers - Maria handled the phone while Karlo handled anything broken or unclean. Their evenings were filled with visits and dinner parties with their ever expanding circle of friends and family, including daughter-in-law Margot. In 1998 they welcomed their first grandchild, the long awaited Emma. Maria claimed that life had never been better. There were also challenges: Karlo had heart surgery in 1999. In 2000 his beloved Maria died of a brain tumour. Karlo's resolve kept him going and he continued to enjoy his grandchildren Emma and Joseph, his friends, his work and his play (fishing). Funeral mass will be said on Tuesday, December 7 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Hungarian Roman Catholic Parish, 365 Burnell Street, Winnipeg. Private family interment will follow at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. Should you so desire, donations in Karlo's memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 6 Donald Street, Suite 200, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3L 0K6, would be appreciated. Chapel Lawn 885-9715
