EVELYN LOUISE CAMERON MAGILL
Date of Passing: Dec 05, 2010
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryEVELYN LOUISE CAMERON MAGILL Peacefully, following a short illness, it is with sadness that we announce the death of Evelyn Magill on Sunday, December 5, 2010 with her family at her side. Ev leaves to honour her memory Jim, her husband and loving companion of 62 years, and to live by the lessons she taught about the importance of family, her children Marilyn (Gerry Kapitany), Barbara (Ron Lapointe), Kerry (Janice Dudeck) and Tracy (Bob Schmidt). She will be loved forever by the lights of her life, her granddaughters Sara (Ryan Guzzo) and Laura Lapointe. She will also be missed by Erin, Molly and David, who joined our family later and were very special to Ev, and by her sisters, brothers, sisters and brothers-in-law Jean (Bill Magill), Grace Stevenson, Jim Cameron (Jean), Don Cameron (Marge), Joyce Cameron, Jack Cameron (Phyl), Maxine (Barry Wart) and Geraldine (John Middleton) as well as many nieces and nephews, who she loved very much. She was predeceased by her parents, Gordon and Bertha Cameron, her sisters Margaret Cameron and Joyce Warner, and her brother Bob Cameron. Ev was born at Lady Minto Hospital in Melfort, Saskatchewan. She attended the one-room Thatch Creek School and then went to Business College. She was clever and industrious and began working in Employee Relations at Macdonalds Consolidated Ltd. in 1943. In 1947 she met Jim Magill who immediately declared her a peach and set out to win her hand. He did and they married in 1949. They built a home together in Saskatoon and Ev chose to make a career of caring for her family, so left Macdonalds Consolidated in 1950. Ev and Jim had two daughters, Marilyn and Barb, in Saskatoon and lived there until C.N.R. transferred them to Vancouver in 1956. In Vancouver their son Kerry and youngest daughter Tracy were born. In 1965, the whole family moved to Winnipeg. Ev took great pride in her family and her vocation as homemaker, and was a fantastic cook. Family dinners were always a treat and she passed on many wonderful recipes to her kids (though the talent to duplicate her dishes seems to have skipped a generation - our efforts just never seem to taste or look as good as Mum's did!) She had a special relationship with granddaughters Sara and Laura and they inspired and energized each other. Ev was eagerly awaiting the birth of her first great-grandchild in March and although this baby will never have the privilege of knowing Great Gram , there will be enough stories to share to guarantee she has an impact on the next generation of her family. Ev and Jim spent 17 wonderful winters of retirement in Mesa, Arizona and enjoyed their many friends and family there. The visits of Sara and Laura brought them particular joy and Gram was always on hand to celebrate their achievements in the pool or chasing rabbits. Ev was a woman of faith and drew strength and inspiration from the teachings of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. She was a long-time member of the Southdale congregation and more recently studied with the Fort Garry congregation. She made many close friends over the years and the family would like to thank them for visiting Ev in the hospital and for the prayers they offered, which were of great comfort to her. The family would like to thank the staff of 4E at St. Boniface General Hospital and 4S at Victoria General Hospital for their kind and compassionate care of Ev over the past few weeks. We would also like to thank the staff and residents of the Waverley Retirement Residence for their friendship and support. Cremation has taken place. We invite all to join us in a gathering of family and friends at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 9 at Green Acres Memorial Funeral Home. There will be a memorial service to honour Ev's memory on Friday, December 10 at 2:00 p.m., at the Kingdom Hall Centre, 227 Lakewood Boulevard. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the charity of one's choice. Or, in keeping with Ev's gentle and loving spirit, just treat each other well and make an extra effort to be kind to everyone you meet.
