MABEL OLYNYK (nee DOBRINSKY) 1926 - 2010 Suddenly, but peacefully on December 8, 2010 Mabel passed away at the Seven Oaks Hospital with her sons Bill and Brent by her side. Our Mom was a pioneer, born and raised in West Kildonan in a little house on Hartford with eight brothers and sisters. There were many occasions celebrated at the house on Hartford when all the brothers and sisters and their families would attend. The food and fun were plenty in those days, memories we often talked about and treasured. Mom remained in West Kildonan all of her life and was proud to have attended Victory School. Mabel was very determined and a survivor. Her journey in life met many challenges and she always worked her way through them. These traits were instilled and passed on to her children. Mabel was a stay at home Mom who volunteered at the schools. At one point she was the President of the Ladies Auxiliary at Legion #141 when it was in its heyday. Mabel was also a local celebrity on the Bingo scene in Winnipeg. It was her favourite pastime, where she really enjoyed socializing with her friends and relatives. For many years Mabel and Bill Sr. ran a bingo at the Hebrew Sick Benefit Hall with proceeds to charity. Mabel was predeceased by her husband Bill of 35 years in 1981; parents Lena and Steve Dobrinsky; brothers John Dobrinsky, Steve (Speed) Dobrinsky, Fred Dixon; and sister Anne Bachman. She is cherished and remembered by her sons Bill Jr., Brent and Kim and daughter Barbara; grandchildren Jade Olynyk, Ryan and Andrew Hrankowski (and families). Mabel is also survived by her brother Bill Dobrinsky; sisters Evelyn Gabbs, DeeDee Clark, and Nerky McMillan and numerous nephews and nieces. We were proud to have you as our Mother and Nanny, you are forever in our hearts. A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, December 12 at 6:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street. A private family interment at a later date at Brookside Cemetery. CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 586-8044

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Mabel Olynyk, what a beautiful soul. My condolences to the family on the loss of s very special person. I met Mabel through my daughter Shelley, who was 3 years old at the time. We moved on to Aikins Street in ‘71. As Shelley ran up and down the street she met Mabel at some point and fell in love with her and Mabel the same. They had a very special bond. So special. 38 years later, I still remember Mabel. Shirley Larence - Posted by: Shirley Larence (Friend) on: Feb 24, 2019

  • I remember Mabel fondly. I went to school with Bill Jr. for about 5 years off and on. One of my favorite vacations was with the Olynyks at Winnipeg Beach. I think I was there for 2 weeks. Bunk beds, picnics, we could walk to the beach. Brent wasn't born yet so it was, me Bill, uncle Bill aunty Mable and Barbra. I felt like I was in a Walt Disney Movie. We were like those kids that went away for the summer and had a blast. More than 30 years went by before I hooked up with Brent. There was obviously a chemistry there because it was like we had never had a break. I think there are 5 years between us. Like another shonra of movie. He was the young cousin that went to University and got 3 or 4 degrees got a job with a title desk and door with a name plate. I think Mable should get a Guinness book record for number of days not missed, BINGO games. If not I'll give her one now. Robbie - Posted by: Robbie Bachman (nephew ) on: Jan 21, 2013
