ROLAND ROHRINGER With sorrow, we announce the passing of Dr. Roland Rohringer on Wednesday, December 8, 2010. Roland leaves behind his wife Betty-Carol, his son and daughter-in-law Carl and Ramona with their children Sean and Samantha, his son Martin, Betty-Carol's son Michael, and her daughter Monica with her children Nico and Gabrielle. Roland was born and raised in Nuremburg, Germany. He obtained his Ph.D in Plant Science at the University of Goettingen, after which he accepted a post-doctoral position at the University of Wisconsin. There, he met his first wife Carol. They lived in Germany and London, Ontario for brief periods before settling in Winnipeg, where Roland had accepted a position at the Canada Research Station for the study of grain diseases at the University of Manitoba. Roland and Carol raised their sons Carl and Martin and eventually dissolved their marriage amicably. Several years later Roland married Betty-Carol. They remained in Winnipeg for a few years. When Roland was invited by the University of Goettingen as a guest professor, he accepted this position of honour, and returned to Germany with Betty-Carol. Last February, they decided to come back to Winnipeg after 19 years in order to be with family and old friends. With his health in serious decline, Roland had the good fortune to have family and good friends around him until the very end of his life. He will be missed by all who knew this man of great passion, especially for astronomy, mathematics, classical music, sports cars, photography, archery, food and wine, and, of course, good company. The family would like to thank the staff on the fourth floor of the Victoria Hospital for their kindness and caring. A memorial reception will be held from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., Eulogies beginning at 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 14 at Thomson In The Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to your favourite charity.
