KURT MAXIMILIAN STEINITZ 1917 - 2010 East Kildonan's sidewalks and transit buses are a little emptier now with Kurt's death on December 9th at the age of 93. A reluctant Wermacht soldier, Kurt was wounded in Russia, captured in North Africa and discovered his love in North America while a PoW in both the US and Canada. Moving here in 1961, Kurt then brought his mother, looking after her until her death at age 96. Kurt's work as a house painter is found across Winnipeg. He was also an artist, and many of his oil paintings were either sold or given to family, friends and some strangers, as well. A traveler, Kurt wrecked three VW Westfalia's in the US and Mexico during his driving/retirement years. Independent despite blindness since 1995, Kurt enjoyed his winters in Desert Hot Springs, CA and July with his extended family in Ann Arbor, Michigan. A great story-teller and joker, Kurt spent Saturdays having coffee with friends at Garden City Mall, and countless hours on Dave's couch. He will be sadly missed by neighbours, friends Helen and John, his daughter Petra, and many grandchildren, especially Doug, Anita, Lisa, Daniel, Norma, Elizabeth, Griselda, Angelina, Gaby and Stefi.
