Jaroslaw was born on December 22, 1917 to Mary (nee Fuczkiewicz) and Joseph Holowaty in the village of Korolivka, in the district of Borsciv, in Western Ukraine. He passed away peacefully in his 92nd year on December 9, 2010 at Seven Oaks Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Fr. Jaroslaw immigrated to Canada in 1931, first settling in Winnipeg, and then attending St. Joseph's Seminary in Edmonton. He was ordained a Ukrainian Catholic priest in June 1943, in Winnipeg, by Bishop Ladyka. Fr. Jaroslaw ministered in parishes throughout the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Winnipeg for over 60 years, including Dauphin (ass't 1943), Fisher Branch (1943-50), Rosa (1950-52), Winnipeg Blessed Virgin Mary (ass't 1952-53), Winnipegosis (1954-55), Gilbert Plains (1956-94), and finally, Winnipeg St. Andrew's (1994-2005). He was an active member of the Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood and was invested as Mitrat in May 1994, in Grandview, Manitoba, by Metropolitan Michael Bzdel. In 2005, Fr. Jaroslaw retired from active priesthood and lived independently at Holy Family Towers in Winnipeg until close to his death. Fr. Jaroslaw is survived by his two nephews, Eric, from Toronto, and Carl, from St. Louis; and by his four great-nephews, Helen, Peter and Gregory, all from Toronto, and Alexandra, from Dallas. He was predeceased by his brother, Rudolf, who died in 2002. Priestly Parastas will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 12, 2010, at St. Joseph's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 250 Jefferson Ave., Winnipeg. Divine Liturgy will also be celebrated at St. Joseph's Ukrainian Catholic Church, at 10:00 a.m. on Monday December 13, 2010. Interment will be held at Holy Family Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Archeparchy of Winnipeg, 233 Scotia St., Winnipeg, MB R2V1V7, or to the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate, 131 Aberdeen Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2W1T9.
