RALPH HANSON August 28, 1922 - December 10, 2010 On Friday, December 10, Ralph passed away peacefully at the Riverview Health Centre at the age of 88 years. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Sylvia; his children, Judi, Brian (Starr) and David (Joy); as well as six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and his brother Stan. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Ralph grew up in a loving home in Brooklands, the youngest of six children. He had a love of life and shared this with his family and friends. As a young man he joined the Navy in 1942 and served on the minesweeper Bellechasse. While on leave he, along with close friends, helped his parents build the family cottage at Brereton Lake. Many happy summers were spent enjoying family and friends; but come late July he would spend hours picking blueberries so he could share his bounty making pancakes for the kids. We especially loved it when he made his Swedish pancakes. Ralph worked in the fur trade for 23 years after the war. In 1967 he became a custodian with the Winnipeg School Division and retired in 1987. Ralph became a Mason and joined the Shrine in 1980. He was a member of the Patrol and spent many summers attending parades throughout the province. He loved to travel to the annual Mid-West meetings held in Canada and the United States. After 55 years in their home on Burnell Street, Ralph and Sylvia moved to Betelstadur. It did not take Dad long to become involved in many of the activities and he really enjoyed volunteering to set up and serve the dinners which were held three nights a week. Ralph will be fondly remembered and missed by many of the ladies he worked with and always enjoyed teasing. Following retirement Mom and Dad travelled extensively throughout Canada and the United States. Many new friends were made on these trips. To celebrate their 50th anniversary they went to Hawaii and this led to several trips to Mexico with close friends. After every trip he would regale us with his stories about the people he met and the antics he could get himself into. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff at the Riverview Health Centre, Palliative Unit, for the care he was given in his final weeks. Cremation has taken place and a service will be held on Thursday, December 16 at 1:00 p.m. at Neil Bardal Inc., 3030 Notre Dame Avenue (across from Brookside Cemetery). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Rm. ON1160, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9. NEIL BARDAL INC. FUNERAL CENTRE (204) 949-2200 nbardal.mb.ca
