SUSANNA KRACIKAS With her son by her side, Susanna Kracikas passed away on Friday December 10, 2010 at Grace Hospital. Susanna was born in Lithuania on January 17, 1919, the only child of a farming family. When she grew up, she met Walter Tendies from a neighbouring community and they married in 1940. Their son Arthur was born two years later. Walter was wounded at the Russian front and died in 1944. As the front moved back into Lithuania, Susanna and her child fled her home and her homeland. When the war ended, they were taken in as refugees in Ansbach, Germany. During that time, she met and married Felix Kracikas in 1947. The threesome moved to Belgium and in 1951 they immigrated to Canada. After a one year work contract at the Gavaga farm in Springfield, Manitoba, they moved to Winnipeg. There they worked hard to start a new life for themselves. Susanna worked at various jobs, including sewing at a local sewing factory and cooking at a lumber camp in Sioux Lookout for several winters. They were members of St. Casimir's Lithuanian Church, from its beginning until its closing. They were also members of the Lithuanian Club. Susanna enjoyed many good times at social gatherings of the Lithuanian community and helped the ladies at church functions and Folklorama. No matter where she lived, she always had a garden. Vegetables and flowers alike thrived under her green thumb. Although she lived most of her life in Canada, she always remembered and spoke of her homeland. In 1998, Felix passed away and Susanna moved to Art and Lillian's home. For the last four years, she has lived at West Park Manor. The funeral service will take place on Thursday, December 16, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main St., with Msgr. M. Comeault officiating. Interment to follow at All Saints Cemetery. KORBAN FUNERAL CHAPEL 956-2193

  • Despite what her son may think, I loved Grandma and will miss her. I'll never forget her unique "garage sale" gifts that we would receive as birthday presents. Never could understand them when I was young, but now that I have kids of my own, I realize how hard it is to buy something you think they'll like. Easier to give something small and some money. Sorry that we grew apart Grandma. I guess stubborn runs in the family blood. Rest in peace! - Posted by: Kelly Tendies (Granddaughter) on: Oct 09, 2013
