DOROTHY MARIE HARRINGTON (nee GRAHAME) The world is a sadder place. Dorothy Marie Harrington passed away unexpectedly on December 9, 2010. Dorothy Marie Grahame was born on September 5, 1928 in Teulon, Manitoba, to William Stuart and Catherine Elizabeth Grahame, an inventor and a school teacher. They were descendents of Scottish immigrants who were among the first settlers of the Canadian west. Dorothy was very proud of her Canadian heritage, and her curiosity and enthusiasm carried her through a life filled with adventure. From earning the nickname Alibi Ike at age five after driving her father's big orange truck and claiming that the hobos did it , to founding the girls' ice hockey team, she was never at a loss for new experiences In recognition of her academic achievements in secondary school, Dorothy was awarded the Governor General medal. At the University of Manitoba, she was a recipient of the Isbister Scholarship and earned a bachelor's degree in home economics. A woman ahead of her time, she went on to the University of Minnesota, where she earned a Master of Science degree in Home Economics. She then returned to Canada to teach at the University of Manitoba, and did pioneering research in the preservation of nutritional content in frozen foods. In 1956, Dorothy married Robert W. Haddock. Together they lived in Michigan, Italy, Turkey and Switzerland, where they had their two daughters, Catherine Marie and Pamella Ann. Never bashful, she loved meeting new people and sharing stories. After divorcing in 1972, Dorothy returned to Canada to live near her sister, Catherine Jean, and her family. She met G. Robert Harrington in January 1973, and they were married on July 7 of that year. G. Robert had three children, Diane, Susan and Rob. Dorothy and her daughters relocated to Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, to join her new family, and Dorothy began a career in real estate. She loved her clients and they loved her. She had been a road rally racer while living in Europe, and her colleagues called her Leadfoot Lily, much to her delight, for completing new listing tours in record time. Known for her honesty and generosity, Dorothy loved travelling the world, having new adventures, spending time in her garden, and more than anything, her friends and family whom she always held so dear. Dorothy will continue to watch over all those she left behind, including her daughter Catherine Marie Day, Catherine's husband John, her two grandchildren, Nejla Marie and Graham Kenan, her daughter Pamella Ann Henson, Pamella's husband Mark, her loving sister Catherine Jean McKenzie, Catherine's children, Donald, Elizabeth, Douglas and Catherine, many other extended family and friends, and her granddoggies, Rockie, Chloe, and Pinky, each of whom brought her great joy. Mom, we love you and miss you. XOXO Contributions in memory of Dorothy Harrington can be directed to the Isbister Undergraduate Scholarship Fund through the University of Manitoba, Development Services, Extended Education Complex, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3T 2N2.
