ESTHER GINPIL (nee HOCHMAN) On December 12th, 2010, two weeks short of her 90th birthday, at the Grace Hospital, surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Esther was the sort of person we would all wish to be; someone who lived a full, meaningful, ethical life and who was admired and loved by those knew her. She had a unique ability to enjoy life to the full, but also possessed a limitless and unfailing capability to support, comfort, encourage, and care for those around her. Her extraordinary spirit was undiminished by age. In her 90th year she remained physically active, mentally sharp, socially engaged, able to converse with people of all ages, and constantly seeking to contribute to the lives of her family and many friends. She continued to volunteer with the Winnipeg Symphony, Shaarey Zedek Synagogue, and CancerCare Manitoba (CCM). At the time of her death plans were underway to recognize Esther's service at CCM by creating an award to honour volunteers who best exemplified her approach to the service of others. Esther is survived by her children Diana, Stephen (Lynnette), David, and Brian and her three grandchildren, Joshua, Howard, and Max. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Harry in 1974. The family wishes to thank the medical staff of the Grace Hospital intensive care unit who cared for her during her brief illness. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations instead be made to the Esther Ginpil Spirit Award, Room 0N1160, CancerCare Manitoba Foundation Inc., 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R3E 0V9 or by phone (204) 787-4177.
